HOW WE WILL SUPPORT OUR DEFINITION ESSAY Strategies of Definition

Let’s start with a Concept…

Please create the following Graphic Organizer in your notes… iPod FunctionNegationExamples As we explain each strategy, write its description in its bubble. Then you will add bubbles that go with each strategy as we talk them in relation to the iPod.

FUNCTION Paragraphs using the function strategy demonstrate how the concept functions or operates in the real world. So… what are the FUNCTIONS of an iPod? (add a bubble for each)  Stores and plays music  Takes and stores pictures  Play games/stay entertained  Search and surf the internet  Has apps for many other functions…

EXAMPLE Paragraphs using the example strategy use examples to help the reader understand your definition. These examples often come from texts. So… what are some EXAMPLES of iPods? (add a bubble for each)  iPod Classic – largest storage capacity  iPod Touch – most multi-functional  iPod Nano – small but entertaining  iPod Shuffle – music only

NEGATION Paragraphs using the negation strategy explain what something IS by showing what it IS NOT. Using negation helps to contrast your definition with others’ definitions. So… what IS NOT (or NEGATES) an iPod? (add a bubble for each)  An iPod is not a phone.  An iPod is not a laptop or PC.  An iPod is not a camera.  An iPod is not a babysitter.

Strategies of Definition Function Stores and plays music entertainment Examples iTouch Shuffle Nano Negation NOT a PC NOT a babysitter

Now you try it! Writing Prompt with the Essential Question that we’ll consider as we write our Definition Essay: What defines a hero? Use all three definition strategies in your response. Use examples from texts you have encountered so far in this unit. (“A Man,” “Moco Limping,” Messenger, “Raymond’s Run”)
