Meg Moulton My Community Service 2007

Community Service Community service is very important because it gives people a chance to give back to the community. I had so much fun doing my community service hours, because I got to spend time with a lot of wonderful adults and children.

Little Indians Daycare For my first service I went to Little Indians Daycare. The daycare services kids from three months old to age twelve.

I decided to help the daycare because I know they are always short-handed. I helped all of the different age groups. I helped change some of the infants diapers, I cleaned the toddlers up after they had gotten dirty, I sanitized toys, I played with the kids, and I helped the after school kids with their homework.

Having Fun I spent most of the time with the after school kids. I played on the Jungle gym and dug around in the sand with them. I had a lot of fun being a kid again!

I did get to spend some time with the small, cute babys. These are two of the sweet girls I played with, Emma and Allie.

My Daycare Experience I really enjoyed the time I spent at Little Indians Daycare. I felt good helping out the short handed staff and spending time with the cute kids was a lot of fun. Helping out and acting like “one of the teachers” did not feel like work at all. Their teachers were very grateful for the break and asked me to come back anytime!

I spent most of my community service hours at Seminole co. High School in two different Special Education classrooms. I really enjoyed being here because this is the school I graduated from and it was nice to go back and visit.

My Day I took one day during spring break to visit the school. I was there from 8:00 to 3:00. It was just like I was in high school again. My job was to be a “Teacher’s Helper” and “Tutor.” Since my major is Speech Pathology, I thought that helping in a Special Ed. Room would be appropriate.

What I did I mostly helped Andrew. He is autistic, which means he is unable to fully communicate with others. Andrew and I mostly used flashcards. I would say the animal on the card and he would pick the correct picture that matched.

Andrew and I spent a lot of time playing with a bouncey ball. It was interesting to see how amazed he was by the game. He was better at throwing than I was.

Andrew and I Playing catch.

I also… I did get a chance to help someone with speech. This is Bryant. He suffers from Traumatic Brain Injury. I helped him rehabilitate his speech by holding a mirror while he watched himself speak.

Some Of the Things I Did.

My Community Service… Helping out at the school was really fun and rewarding. I felt like the students as well as the teachers appreciated my help.

I hope I did all that I could to help the two schools that I visited. I do hope to have the opportunity to do more community service in the future. I realized that it is not such a “service” when you are having fun.
