Critical ‘Need-to-Know’ Information PHASE 3 – SECONDARY RESEARCH REPORT

Format and General Research Report Expectations: Your research report should follow the outlined success criteria provided on the assignment EXACTLY. Use the work you completed during phases 1 and 2 as a starting point for this phase. Use the sub-headings indicated for each section.

Do not use personal pronouns (I, me, my, we, our, your, etc). Use “one” if you cannot figure out how to avoid this in your sentence. Always use formal writing. We are not having a conversation! Do not use contractions: “don’t” should be “do not” Avoid “This essay is about” “My paper will discuss” Write out numbers 1-10 “Eight” not “8”

Title Page Create an APA format title page. You should have an original title that is based on your research question.

Background Information An expository paragraph 1-2 pages Find a credible source that will give you background information on your topic in general. symptoms, causes, definitions, general information

Research Question – Definition of Terms ½ - 1 page State your research question from phase 1. MUST BE A QUESTION Identify the cause and effect relationship – which variable from the RQ is the independent and which variable is the dependent. Explain any other terms that are going to be relevant to your research (i.e. age, gender, culture, economics, education…) Explain them in your own words. DO NOT define them – explain how they are relevant to your research and arguments.

Hypothesis 1/2 – 1 page State your detailed hypothesis. Make sure to follow the success criteria from phase 1. If the hypothesis from phase 1 is not correct based on the research from in phase 2 – it is OK – don’t change it.

Secondary Academic Research 5 pages minimum (Introduction, 3 Paragraphs, Conclusion) Use the research and evidence you found from your sources into 3 argumentative paragraphs. Each of your arguments must provide one explanation of how the 2 variables in your research question are connected. In-text citations must be included throughout, not just at the end of a paragraph. Integrate quotes, don’t just throw them in.

Introduction (1 page minimum): State the 3 arguments that you intend to use to answer your research question. This is done from the work you did on phase 2. Again, it may be different from your arguments in your hypothesis.

3 Body Paragraphs (3 pages): Create a name for each argument that you will use as the subtitle to each paragraph. Provide evidence from your research sources in phase 2 to explain your argument and the connection between the 2 variables in your research question. Use concise paragraphs of information and evidence to support each point in all your arguments. Make sure all of your arguments are related to your research question and hypothesis. You must use 2 academic sources in each paragraph. You can also use case studies to enhance your arguments – you will need to find appropriate sources in addition to the ones in phase 2.

Advice on How to Write an Argument Handout given in class OWL Purdue Online Writing Lab

How to Effectively Use a Quote Introduce the quotation with your own words and integrate it grammatically into the sentence. Examples: NO: In this study, children were taught effective ways to deal with confrontations through role playing. "They showed a significant increase in coming up with relevant solutions to interpersonal problems" (Smith 2012, 103). └ THIS A FLOATING QUOTATION—DON’T DO IT! YES: In this study, children were taught effective ways to deal with confrontations through role playing: " They showed a significant increase in coming up with relevant solutions to interpersonal problems " (Smith 2012, 103). BETTER YET: In this study, children who were taught effective ways to deal with confrontations through role playing "showed a significant increase in coming up with relevant solutions to interpersonal problems " (Smith 2012, 103). Most of your paper should not rely on direct quotes, - you are to mostly paraphrase.

Conclusion (1 page minimum): 1-2 pages Theory Application: Tie together all of the information that you just presented to the reader. This is accomplished by relating your information to some theoretical perspective that we discussed during the course Refer to Hypothesis: Also, you must refer to your hypothesis and give details whether or not your research supported your initial explanation.

Reference List Include on a separate sheet of paper using APA style the sources of your secondary research used in this final report. Make sure you consult the resource I gave you to do this step properly. Source all work included in your report – do not leave any out or add ones in that you did not use.
