© 2012 Autodesk Asset Library Development in Autodesk® Factory Design Suite: Dos and Don’ ts Steve Schuchard Technical CAD Manager – Production Modeling Corporation

© 2012 Autodesk Class Summary Building an Asset library is absolutely critical to the success of using Factory Design Suite and being productive. This class will discuss the Do’s and Don’ts of building your library. What items do you take into consideration when building assets?

© 2012 Autodesk About your speaker Steve Schuchard Production Modeling Corporation - PMC Technical CAD Manger and Factory Design Suite Specialist Applicable Experience  General Motors  Supervisor CAD Technology and Support - Central Layout Group  Developed, Implemented, and Supported:  3D Plant Layout Processes  Laser Scanning  Standards  Training

© 2012 Autodesk Learning Objectives  Setting Asset Expectations  Construction Techniques for Layout Users  Understanding how Assets help Workflow  Asset Distribution  Library Structures  Considerations for Practical Conventions

© 2012 Autodesk understand the differences…

© 2012 Autodesk Level of Detail FabricationInstallation

© 2012 Autodesk Who is your target user?  2D\3D AutoCAD to FDS Transformations  FDS Ideal Candidate  2D AutoCAD Users  Easy Candidate – Should turn into ideal or remain  Inventor to FDS Inventor Shifts  Challenging Candidate – Desired detail, complex model creator

© 2012 Autodesk Library Types  Out of the Box – Autodesk Content  Personal – Unshared Content  Corporate – Standard Shared Assets  Temporary – really an Asset?  Distribution Methods  Cloud  Zip

© 2012 Autodesk why should I share… ROI

© 2012 Autodesk Sharing Benefits Why - It makes FDS work!  One author  Layout Time Savings  Standard Symbols  Bi - directional editing in AutoCAD and Inventor!  Marketing Tool for Equipment Builders (Web Based “Cloud” Content) Assume Cloud Published content will be downloaded and reused and re- purposed.

© 2012 Autodesk The Good Stuff…

© 2012 Autodesk File Structure  Create your directory structure with forward thinking so you do not have to move items later.  Keep the filename of the part the same as you want to see it in the browser.  When saving your master asset files, keep it in the same directory structure as published.

© 2012 Autodesk Feature Naming Don’t use Extrusion100 - CamelCase - Use_Underscores - Plan ahead with Names

© 2012 Autodesk Adjustment The first sketch constraints impact users!

© 2012 Autodesk Parameter Names  FDS Users View of your model  1 = enabled / on, 0 = disabled / off  Parameters shown to user in Alphabetic Order! (Componet Name + parameter – ex Base_Width, Base_Height)  Make all critical parameters a User Parameter.

© 2012 Autodesk UCS – It really makes no difference, but… Simplify Authoring by using same UCS orientation as AutoCAD…

© 2012 Autodesk Asset Publishing – Landing Plane / Insertion Points Always define…  Landing Plane  Insertion point  Consider AutoCAD CAD Practices  Are you making multiple insertion points? Why:  Insertion Pt1 = block insertion in AutoCAD  Drag operation in Inventor  Tab to switch between Insertion Points

© 2012 Autodesk Variants! Variants save time and help your AutoCAD User base. Eases migration and implementation of FDS / 3D Layout.

© 2012 Autodesk 2D Plan View Use the option to create simple plan view for AutoCAD.

© 2012 Autodesk Elevation Control Pro  2D Plan Views  Elevations makes elevation control easy. Cons  Each elevation will be a new instance… more variations  Requires Connector Classes Alternative – Create a work plane and create a constraint for the items to that plane. By performing work in this fashion, you can change the elevation of all these items at the same time.

© 2012 Autodesk Check Perform UAT on each asset. 1. Publish to a temporary library. 2. Roundtrip each item after modification. 3. Open the item in Navisworks. 4. Verify Plan Views are updating correctly in AutoCAD. 5. Add to a master list.

© 2012 Autodesk Don'ts  Fillets and Curves – Only as necessary  Emboss Text – minimum  iMates – ouch  Materials – ex. - Expanded Mesh – Does not convert to Navisworks or AutoCAD.

© 2012 Autodesk Administration Tips Limit number of authors. Keep a master catalog file with all the assets you have created in one file(s). You will be asked for this in the future. Use the master catalog file to test new versions of FDS against existing files and assets as you migrate to new versions. Perform Quality Control.

© 2012 Autodesk Summary  Understand point of use – Downstream  Consider sharing options.  Multiple project use?  Develop a convention  Be consistent  Use the right amount of detail.
