RESEARCH PAPER FULL OUTLINE

Full outline is  The formal organizational stage of the writing process  Usually as long or longer than your final paper  Your paper without transitions and your own commentary

Full outline includes  Topic Sentences  Quotations and paraphrases from both your primary and secondary sources  In-text citations

Full outlines are wonderful…  Because they allow you to “cut and paste” your quotations  They show you if you are focusing on one aspect of your paper too much  They keep you organized before your rough draft

In-text (parenthetical) citations  Objective: Clearly direct your reader to the entry in your works cited page  Required for all information that is not “common knowledge”  Must be used for paraphrases or any direct references to thoughts and ideas that are not your own

Standard Formatting  In-text citation: Author, page #  (Townsend 10).  Mention the author in the text, then only give page #: Townsend writes “blah, blah, blah” (10).

Two authors  Works cited page reads: Jakobson, Roman and Linda R. Waugh.  Parenthetical Citation reads: (Jakobson and Waugh 25).

Works listed by a title  Works Cited Reads: “Mandarin.” The Encyclopedia Americana ed. Citation reads:  “blah, blah, blah” (“Mandarin”).

Works Listed by a title 2  Works Cited Reads: Report of the President’s Commission on Campus Unrest. New York: Arno,  Citation reads: “blah, blah, blah” (Report).

Citing Two or more Works by the same author  RULE: Put a comma after the author’s last name and add the title of the work (if brief) or shortened version and relevant pages  OR, Use the title of the book in your sentence
