Drafting the Body Additional Drafting and Paraphrasing Info

Section A You must explain and prove your problem. Ideally, you should use 2 to 3 of your sources for this part. – Demonstrate that your issue really is a problem. – Explain the causes behind your problem.

Section B Write about programs that have shown success in other places. – These are the programs that have been used to help solve or improve the problem that you are writing about. – Explain how these programs solved or reduced the problem. – You should use 2 to 3 sources again to demonstrate your level of research.

Section C You must write a PERSONAL solution or program. All of this information should come from your head. List the name of your program. The activities the program will do. The benefits it will provide the community. Answer the following questions—Why? What? When? Where? How? (and any other relevant questions)

Guidelines Double space your rough draft Use in-text citations – You should use a combination of quotations and paraphrasing – You should use more paraphrasing than quotes when available Be sure to comment on each piece of included information Do NOT use personal pronouns in any section except for Section C

Guidelines Set up your paragraphs like this – Use transition words/phrases to start your paragraph when appropriate – Connect those to a topic sentence that lines up with your thesis – Provide some researched information – Comment on that information (one or two sentences) – If needed, include more research and another set of comments

What is Paraphrasing? PARAPHRASING IS… A rewriting of text in your own words Used to clarify meaning Used to shorten a longer statement but keeps the main ideas

What To Do and What Not To Do Proper Paraphrasing 1.Is not necessarily shorter than the original passage. 2.Focuses on writing a specific passage in your own words. 3.Includes all the same information as the original source Cautions when Paraphrasing 1.Make sure your wording is not too close to the original 2.Do not copy the author’s sentence structure. 3.Make sure your wording doesn’t distort the original meaning

Example Passage from Book Ancient Egyptians believed that Osiris, a good and wise king, was the first pharaoh. He spread knowledge to other parts of the world, while his wife, Isis, ruled Egypt in his place.

Examples PARAPHRASED PASSAGE King Osiris was the first pharaoh and spread knowledge. Queen Isis ruled Egypt when he was gone. Poor Paraphrasing King Osiris was an ancient Egyptian King and the first pharaoh. He was good and wise because he spread knowledge to other parts of the world. His wife Isis ruled Egypt in his place.

SUMMARIZING When you simply want to give your readers a brief overview of a text 1.Include only the main points of the original passage. You will not include all the details, as you do in a paraphrase. 2.Keep the length down to no more than half the length of the original. 3.Be careful not to use the author's words.

What’s the Difference?
