How To Get An In My Class

And Succeed in School

There are only 2 things you need to do in order to get an A in my class:

SHOW UP

Be there! Go to school every day! Be on time. Be prepared If you just keep showing up, you will be ahead of the game! Most people bail out.

FOLLOW UP

Do What it Takes to Succeed Do your homework Turn in assignments on time If you are absent, get the assignments Be responsible for your own work

PARTICIPATE You only learn when you are involved. Focus on the task at hand Ask questions Get extra help help if you need it Guard your Participation Points with your life! They can change your grade

Participation counts for 15% of your grade. It includes homework, being on time and prepared and class participation At the end of the semester, all points are added, averaged, and translated into a percentage grade. The grade is added to the gradebook

If you’re a pretty good student: Writing Grammar/Spelling 97% + 80% = 177  2 = 89% = B+ Writing Gram/Spell Part 97% + 80% + 95% = 272  3 = 91% = A-

If you’re a struggling student: Writing Grammar/Spelling 78% + 75% = 153  2 = 77% = C+ Writing Gram/Spell Part 78% + 75% + 95% = 248  3 = 83% = B

Tips for Success

Create a Place to Study! Any small space will do– Keep all your supplies in one place. Your backpack can serve as your portable office.

Use Your Time Wisely Stay ORGANIZED Write down your assignments in your planner. Keep your backpack in order. Pack for school the night before.

Set Your Priorities Put your schoolwork first. Choose your friends wisely—do you have the same goals? Turn of the TV Hang up the phone.

Learn to Cope with Problems Even A+ students sometimes have problems with teachers or problems. Learn to cope with them in a positive way.

PROBLEM TEACHERS Try to let your good classes set the tone for your day. Always be completely prepared! If you are really having a conflict, get help!

Problem Classes Spend twice as much time on your difficult classes. Do your tough homework first. ASK QUESTIONS! Get a buddy Don’t skip class

Don’t Procrastinate Procrastination is a bad habit. Problems or work WON’T go away if you ignore them. There is a way to kick the procrastination habit.

Kick the Procrastination Habit At least LOOK at the material. Divide a big assignment into smaller pieces Use that extra 15 minutes to do SOMETHING. JUST START!

Reward Yourself Treat yourself to a TV show or a phone call or game of basketball AFTER you’ve finished your homework. Your report card will be your biggest reward!

SUCCESS = SHOW UP + FOLLOW UP

Are You Ready for the Quiz??? Answer these 5 questions:

1.What are participation points and what do I give them for? 2.What two things do you need to do to succeed in my class? 3.What should you do if you have a ‘problem’ teacher? 4.What is procrastination, and should you do it? 5.What does it mean to “set your priorities’?

Congratulations! You are on your way to a successful year in Language Arts!
