Milk- where it comes from and what we use it for.

Where does milk come from? We get milk from cows. Some people are allergic to cows milk. We get cheese, yogurt, cream & ice- cream from milk. It is full of calcium and helps our teeth and bones grow. We get milk from goats. Some people can’t drink cows milk & drink goats milk instead. Goats milk is used for cheese, yogurt and even moisturiser.

Milk farming Some farmers keep cows for their milk. The cows eat grass and produce lots of milk. The cow need to be milked twice a day in a special milking shed.

Where does milk go? Years ago, farmers had to milk by hand but now they have special machines and milking takes about 1 hour. A creamery truck comes and collects the milk. In the creamery, it is pasteurised this makes it safe to drink and makes it last longer.

Uses of Milk At the creamery, the thick cream is taken off the top of the milk and this is used for cream, butter and cheese. The milk left over is put into cartons and brought to the shops

Calcium Milk is high in calcium. This is good for growing bones and teeth. Milk can be added to other things to make it even tastier such as; Milkshakes Hot chocolate Ice-cream

No point crying over spilt milk This is an expression meaning; once it’s done, it’s done, no point worrying about it..
