5 What are tractors used for?
One of the things they are used for is to plough the land so farmers can grow crops. Have there always been tractors like these?

6 When my nan was a little girl...

7 Farmers worked differently long ago.
The farmers long ago didn't have any farming machinery, like tractors. Instead of fences there were stone walls.

8 When my dad was a little boy...

10 Now...

11 Long ago farmers grew their own vegetables, they didn't buy from shops
Long ago farmers grew their own vegetables, they didn't buy from shops. They used donkeys and horses to do the ploughing.

12 They didn't have any bailers, so they used hay forks, and make cocks of hay.

13 DAIRY FARMERS is what they do today The dairy farmers milk their cows twice a day. Every morning and evening they bed the cows with hay or straw. Farmers have very modern machines. There is a machine for everything. Milk is collected at the farmers sheds from static tanks. Long ago they had to milk by hand. They had to get the horses ready to bring the milk to the creamery. Every summer they kept them out in the fresh air, but in the winter the farmers kept them in the shed. Dairy farmers make silage pits instead of bails of hay. Farmers put out fertilizer at the end of spring. They have to wait two months for the grass to grow. Farmers from years ago would not have as much machinery as they have nowadays. Although farmers understood how much time a tractor could save them and what work it could do for a very long time, a tractor was too expensive for a farmer to purchase.
