Cornell Notes Who ruled 1 st empire in India? Maurya Empire

Maurya Empire [pgs ] Chandragupta (Chandra) Maurya was the first ruler to unite India under a single empire (300 B.C.). He teamed with Kautilya, a Brahmin, to develop a strategy to conquer and unite India. He used armies with brightly colored elephants to terrify his enemies. Yet, he lived in fear of his enemies and had his food tasted for poison. Chandra Gupta developed a bureaucracy ( a system of government based on rules and governed by officials) to bring order to a land of many peoples with differing cultures.

Maurya Empire Maurya’s Empire was separated into regions, and then broken into provinces, and divided into villages so that his rule would reach every village in the empire! His adviser, Kautilya, wrote a book called, the Arthashastra, which were a collection of his theories on government.

Asoka’s Rule of Tolerance [pgs ] Asoka was the 3 rd Mauryan Emperor. He went to war against Kalinga, but 100,000 soldiers died. Asoka felt remorse and moved away from harsh teachings of the Arthashastra. Asoka ruled based on “moral law”. 3 Principles: Ahimsa- one should not injure any living thing, Tolerance-respect others’ beliefs and customs, Welfare- ruler had a duty to serve his people well.

Gupta Empire & India’s Classical Age [pgs ] Gupta empire reached its greatest size under Chandra Gupta II (Gupta Empire). Chandra Gupta II used his wealth to encourage artists and scholars and India experienced great advances in literature, art, science, and mathematics (Classical Age).
