 To indicate the title of a SHORT work  To indicate direct quotes (the actual words that someone said or wrote)

Italics/UnderlineQuotation Marks Book TitleChapter in Book Magazine TitleArticle in Magazine/Newspaper/Book Newspaper TitleEssay Album TitleSong on Album AnthologyPoem Television Show TitleEpisode Title

 Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire is one of my favorite books!  I wrote an essay called Stem Cell Research.  I could not believe Lady Gaga’s performance of Paparazzi on the MTV Video Music Awards.  I can’t wait to see New Moon in November!

 Another reason that we use quotation marks is to indicate the direct speech or writing of someone.  When doing this, there are several rules to follow:  Always tell who said/wrote the quote! You may either introduce or conclude a quote with the source.  After your introduction, put a comma.  If you are quoting a complete sentence, capitalize the first letter inside the quotation marks.  Always place end marks INSIDE the quotation marks.  For example:  According to Theodore Roosevelt, “What is to give light must endure the burning.”  “What is to give light must endure the burning,” said Theodore Roosevelt.

 When words fail, Music speaks.  -H.C. Anderson  Dream as if you’ll live forever, live as if you’ll die tomorrow.  -James Dean  Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools talk because they have to say something.  -Plato

 What are two reasons that we use quotation marks?  For what type of works do we use quotation marks for the titles?  What must you always tell your reader if you use a direct quote?  Where do all end marks go when using quotation marks?
