Indonesia Its culture, how Islam spread, and its architecture.

Food and Culture For Indonesian food, we made Kuih Bahulu. Other popular Indonesian foods include nasi goreng, laksa, soto, and gado-gado. Indonesians eat a lot of rice and noodles. In Indonesian culture, people have pantuns (a type of poetry), batik, silat, etc. By the way, that is not what real kuih bahulu looks like. S just untraditionally used Madeleine molds.

Clothes We wanted to make a Kebaya in real life, but it was a bit too hard. Here's a picture of it instead. A kebaya is a traditional blouse or dress and is the national dress of Indonesia that many Indonesian women wear on special occasions. Modern kebayaKebaya drawn by N The men wear sarongs.

Islam in Indonesia Indonesia has the largest Muslim population in the world. Statistics from 2009 show that there are almost 203 million muslims in Indonesia. That's almost 88.2% of the population in Indonesia. Islam was mainly spread by Muslim traders marrying local women during the 11th century. By the 16th century, Islam had surpassed all the other religions in Indonesia. Islam is the dominant religion in Aceh and approximately 4 million are identified as Muslims. According to data from 2005 census, religious percentage says 98.87% are Muslim, 0.87% Protestantism, 0.15% Buddhism, 0.09% Catholicism, and 0.02% Hinduism. Islam in Aceh is Sunni with Shafi’ee Madhhab in Fiqh.

The Indonesian flag is one red and white stripe. It is called Bendera Merah-Putih, or Sang Saka Merah-Putih in Indonesian. It is very similar in design to the Polish, Monaco, and Hessian flag. Flag Indonesian flag that S made. (below) Monaco flag Polish flag Hessian flag

Architecture Although other islamic countries were very quick to adapt to the Middle Eastern architecture of masjids, Indonesia and Malaysia weren't that quick. To begin with, there are 7 types of architectural designs usually used for designing masjids. They are the Traditional Vernacular, the Sino-Eclectic, the Colonial, the North Indian, the Modern Vernacular, the Modernistic Expressionism, the Post-Modern Revivalism.

Traditional Vernacular Traditional Vernacular basically means the traditional design that was used in the pre-colonial period. The materials that were available, the technology, and the skills they had then influenced this style of Masjids. Indonesians were very used to this style and used it a lot. The first masjid in this style was made between the 16th and 17th century. This design is made out of timber, widely available in Indonesia, and the most interesting thing about it is the single, double, or triple tiered roof, pyramid style. For this project, I made a triple tiered roof, because I thought it looked pretty nice.
