3 The Maldives Introduction:
The Maldives is a country of south Asia. The country is in the Indian Ocean. It is located southwest of India and Srilanka in the Laccadive Sea. It has 1199 islands that are clustered into 26 major atolls. Male is the capital and the largest city. Traditionally it’s called Kings Island. The total area of the Maldives is 298 km2 and the population is almost 341,358.

4 History of the Maldives
In 12th century sailors from East Africa and Arab Countries came to the Maldives. After that in the 16th century, the Portuguese conquered the Maldives and ruled for 15 years.

5 The country was a British colony from 1887 to 1965.
But the Maldives gained independence from the British Empire in 1965. In 1968, it became a republic and the country assumed its present name.

6 Culture of Maldives Clothing: Maldives clothing is a symbol of the islands culture . The traditional costumes of Maldives are quite simple. Men wear Sarongs. And women wear Libaas.

7 Folk songs and dance Music and dance is one of the most important part of Maldivan culture. The most popular folk dances of Maldives are Bodu beru, Bandiyaa Jehun, Bolimalaafath Neshun,Dhandi Jehun,Gaa odi lava e.t.c.

8 Food habits Rice and fish are the staple food of the Maldivian people. Among vegetables, they eat Betel leaf,cloves, lime e.t.c. A vegetable ,which is known as foh, chewed after meals. They normally eat meat on special occasions.

9 Why is the Maldives famous?
The Maldives is famous because of its enjoyable weather,heavenly beaches and lagoons,luxurious holiday resorts and the peace loving people.
