Learning Goal O Students will understand the difference between hardware and software and understand parts of an Excel Worksheet O Students will understand the difference between hardware and software and understand parts of an Excel Worksheet.

O What is Excel and why do people use it?

Question? O When you buy a computer/laptop are the programs already on the computer? O What are the programs called?

Hardware O All the physical pieces that make up a computer. O Hardware is useless without software.

Software O All the programs that tell a computer what to do and how to do them.

Software Continued O Available at retail stores and on the Web for purchase and download.

Two Categories O System Software- programs that control the operations of the computer and its devices O Application Software- programs designed to make users more productive and/or assist them with personal tasks.

O Excel worksheet allows data to be easily summarized and charted.

O In comparison with the car, before you can fully operate Excel you have to know the parts in Excel.

Excel O A spreadsheet software that allows users to organize data in rows and columns and perform calculations.

Spreadsheet O A grid of rows and columns that holds numbers, words and formulas.

Rows O Identified by numbers on the left side of the worksheet.

Columns O Identified by letters at the top of the worksheet.

Cell O The box in a table or worksheet where a column and row meet.

Name Box O Shows the active cell in a worksheet.

Active Cell O The cell that contains the highlight or dark border around it.

Workbook O Referred to as a collection of related worksheets.

Creating a Worksheet and Embedded Chart  The first step in creating an effective worksheet is to Understand What is Required.

Required Needs Document O includes a needs statement, a source of data, a summary of calculations, and any other special requirements for the worksheet.

Formatting the Worksheet O You format the worksheet to emphasize certain entries and make the worksheet easier to read and understand.

Attractive O Worksheets are only useful when they are easy to read and understand.

Font O Defines the appearance and shape of the letters, numbers and special characters.

Font Size O Specifies the size of the characters on the screen and are measured in points.

Font color O Defines the color of the characters

Font style O Indicates how the characters are emphasized. (Bold, italicized, and underlined.

Cell Style O The capability of changing several characteristics in of a cell at one time.

Bold O To emphasize it or make it stand out from the rest of the worksheet.

What is a chart? O A Chart is a graphical representation of data contained in a worksheet

Why add Charts? O Charts can make the data in the worksheet easier to read and understand.

Why add charts? O Charts and graphics add visual impact to the worksheet and help convey the meaning of worksheet data.

Why add charts? O Allow readers to see at a glance patterns or relationships in the worksheet data.
