How to draw a Geometric Tessellation You will need a Ruler #2 Pencil Eraser 8x11 paper computer

Lesson 1: Find inches on your ruler Most rulers are 12” Inches This example is 6 inches long inches

Start at Zero (0) Find 0 on the ruler 1 inch 2 inches Do you see the pattern?

Which finger segment is only 1” long? Measure your finger Which finger segment is only 1” long? Is it your index finger? Middle finger? The Pinky?

Fractions of an inch Do you see the pattern? Find ½ of an inch on the ruler 1 and ½ inches 2 and ½ inches Do you see the pattern?

Let’s get started. Line up the 0” on the ruler with the edge of your paper Does the 0” line on the ruler touch the edge of your paper?

Put marks at the top of your paper With the 0” at the edge of the paper, use your pencil to mark 1”, 2”, 3”, 4”, 5” and 6” Does the 0” line on the ruler touch the edge of your paper? Put marks at the top of your paper

Does the 0” line on the ruler touch the edge of your paper? To make sure the lines are straight, do the same thing at the bottom of your paper. Does the 0” line on the ruler touch the edge of your paper? Use your pencil to mark 1”, 2”, 3”, 4”, 5” and 6” at the bottom

Now line up the dots on the edge of the ruler and draw a straight line!

Now do the same thing again in the other direction! Turn you paper 90 degrees To make sure the lines are straight: Measure one side and mark it Measure the other side and mark it Always draw a line between 2 dots Use your pencil to mark 1”, 2”, 3”, 4”, 5” and 6” Use the ruler to draw a straight line between the dots

Put marks on the side of your paper With the 0” at the edge of the paper, use your pencil to mark 1”, 2”, 3”, 4”, 5” and 6” Does the 0” line on the ruler touch the edge of your paper? Put marks on the side of your paper

Put marks on the other side of your paper With the 0” at the edge of the paper, use your pencil to mark 1”, 2”, 3”, 4”, 5” and 6” Does the 0” line touch the edge of your paper? Put marks on the other side of your paper Use the ruler to connect the dots!

you did it! You have just drawn a geometric tessellation called a GRID

Lesson 2: Drawing More Tessellations These are the 11 basic tessellations. Using the starter worksheets, draw the rest of the tessellation. Print out the page and use a ruler to complete the design.
