How to draw a Geometric Tessellation by Ms. Day Lesson 1: 4 sided polygons (grid) Lesson 2: Basic tessellations Lesson 3: Drawing in Word

How to draw a Geometric Tessellation You will need a –Ruler –#2 Pencil –Eraser –8x11 paper –computer

Lesson 1: Find inches on your ruler Most rulers are 12” Inches This example is 6 inches long inches

Start at Zero (0) Find 0 on the ruler 1 inch 2 inches Do you see the pattern? 0

Which finger segment is only 1” long? –Is it your index finger? –Middle finger? –The Pinky?

Fractions of an inch Find ½ of an inch on the ruler 1 and ½ inches 2 and ½ inches Do you see the pattern? 0

1/8 1/2 ¼ An Inch is divided into parts called fractions. ¼ of an inch is: 1 part of an inch that is divided into 4 parts Ex. 1 / 4 =.25 ¼ of $1.00 is.25 cents 3/4

Let’s get started. Line up the 0” on the ruler with the edge of your paper Does the 0” line on the ruler touch the edge of your paper? 0

With the 0” at the edge of the paper, use your pencil to mark 1”, 2”, 3”, 4”, 5” and 6” Does the 0” line on the ruler touch the edge of your paper? Put marks at the top of your paper 0

To make sure the lines are straight, do the same thing at the bottom of your paper. Does the 0” line on the ruler touch the edge of your paper? Use your pencil to mark 1”, 2”, 3”, 4”, 5” and 6” at the bottom 0

Now line up the dots on the edge of the ruler and draw a straight line!

Now do the same thing again in the other direction! Turn you paper 90 degrees Put the 0” on the edge of the paper Put marks at 1” intervals on the side of your paper Go to the other side of the paper and line up the edge with 0” Put marks at 1” intervals (to keep the lines straight) Connect the dots!

With the 0” at the edge of the paper, use your pencil to mark 1”, 2”, 3”, 4”, 5” and 6” Does the 0” line on the ruler touch the edge of your paper? Put marks on the side of your paper 0

With the 0” at the edge of the paper, use your pencil to mark 1”, 2”, 3”, 4”, 5” and 6” Does the 0” line touch the edge of your paper? Put marks on the other side of your paper 0

Always measure both sides to keep the lines straight! To make sure the lines are straight, Measure one side and mark it Measure the other side and mark it Always draw a line between 2 dots Use your pencil to mark 1”, 2”, 3”, 4”, 5” and 6” Use the ruler to draw a straight line between the dots

You have just drawn a geometric tessellation called a GRID

Lesson 2: Drawing More Tessellations These are the 11 basic tessellations. Using the starter worksheets, draw the rest of the tessellation. Print out the page and use a ruler to complete the design.

Tessellation Starter Worksheets Save to your computer and draw in Word! 1. Open a new Word Document. 2. Go to the file you saved 3. To change the grid: Go to the bottom left corner of the screen and click Draw, select grid, grid spacing: horizontal.5 and vertical.5 grid setting: 1 line grid setting: 1 line Check – display grid lines to see the lines 4. To Draw, select AutoShapes Select different shapes to make a tessellation or use the line tool 5. Use the grid to organize the shapes 6. Use the paint brush to change the color of the lines around the shape. 7. Use the paint bucket to add color to the shape.
