Brief history of Lithuanian Energy Institute Institute was founded in 1956 as the Institute of Energy and Power Engineering of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. In it became known among local and foreign scientific society interested in fundamental research in hydrodynamics, thermal physics, material science, simulation and control of power supply systems, hydrology as the Institute for Physical and Engineering Problems of Energy Research. In January 1992 the Government of Republic of Lithuania granted the state science institution status to the institute which became independent from the Academy of Sciences and was named the Lithuanian Energy Institute.

Institute is certificated on ISO 9001:2001 and ISO 14000:2005 – quality management system

Collaboration with Nordic countries Support of Nordic Council of Ministers for young researchers – in period of three Lithuanian Energy Institute’s PhD Candidates received stipends to visit Nordic research centres. With support of Nordic Energy Research Programme and EU Structural Funds several young researchers in the field of fuel cells and hydrogen visited research centres in Stockholm, Oslo, Iceland. There is a need for closer co-operation with Nordic countries. There is a substantial interest of Lithuanian Energy Institute’s researchers to visit Nordic research centres. One of the possible examples could be CYSENI conference on energy topics held at Lithuanian Energy Institute, where young scientists from Baltic Sea region participate.

Lithuanian Energy Institute and Ignalina NPP for developed technology Fuel reuse of Ignalina NPP Unit 1 in Unit 2 reactor was granted a golden medal of Lithuanian Industrialist Confederation competition “Lithuanian product of the year 2007”

Lithuanian Energy Institute for the implemented project Control system of leaktightness of heat releasing element shells, used during disarrangement of spent fuel assemblies in the “hot chamber” was granted a golden medal of Lithuanian Industrialist Confederation competition “Lithuanian product of the year 2008”
