Virginia Studies VS 4 Review Activities The Virginia Colony

Cash Crop… Tobacco was the main cash crop in Virginia Cash crops depended on agriculture Tobacco was sold in England to make money Africans were brought to be an inexpensive (cheap) source of labor The Africans were brought to America and worked as slaves against their will.

Cultural Landscapes Cultural landscapes are changes to land that reflects people’s backgrounds or cultures. Virginia’s culture was different from England’s culture. Examples of cultural landscapes are barns, homes and churches. American Indians cultural landscapes were different from the colonists cultural landscapes.

Place Names . The names of places and things come from different languages. Roanoke is an American Indian word that means wampum or seashells. Chesapeake is also an American Indian word. Richmond is an English word from that comes from the name Richmond-on-the-Thames

Settlement Areas The English settled in the Tidewater and Piedmont regions. Africans who became slaves settled in the Tidewater and Piedmont regions to work in the tobacco fields.

Settlement Areas (continued) The Germans and Scotch Irish settled in the Shenandoah Valley. Indians were in the Tidewater, Piedmont and Appalachian Plateau regions were their homes were before the colonists arrived.

Migration Migration means moving to new areas. Living in new areas caused people to change their customs. Geographical factors influenced the location of the capital.

Movement of the Capital Reasons for moving from Jamestown to Williamsburg Marsh land at Jamestown Contaminated/bad drinking water Dirty living conditions Higher elevation at Williamsburg Fire destroyed the buildings at Jamestown

Movement of the Capital (continued) Reasons for moving from Williamsburg to Richmond Population/people were moving west Richmond’s location was better for trade Moving to Richmond increased distance from attack from British by sea Richmond was a central location (in the center) Going west

Economy Economy is how money is made and spent. Money is a medium of exchange or currency. Few people had paper money or coins. Tobacco was often used as money. Barter is the trading of goods or services without money. Barter was often used instead of money.

Economy (Continued) Credit is buying goods or services now and paying for them later. Farmers and consumers bought goods and services on credit. Debt is a good or service owed to another. Debts were paid when the crops were harvested and sold. Savings is putting money away to spend later. Few colonists had money that they could save until later.
