 What is a calorie?  Unit of energy  Some foods have more calories than others  Tipping the balance of the energy equation will result in weight loss or gain  Your appropriate weight range is influenced by several factors: age, gender, height, body frame, activity level  BMI: Body Mass Index  Ratio that allows your to assess your body size in relation to your height and weight

Body Composition Overweight: condition in which a person in heavier than the standard weight range for his/her height Obesity: having an excess amount of body fat Underweight: condition in which a person is less than the standard weight range for his/her height
