What is Energy? The ability to produce change or make things move Energy can produce Light Heat Motion Sound Growth Technology

Can you make things move? Then you have energy… …but there are different forms and types of energy…

Forms of Energy Kinectic The energy of motion Electrical, Radiant, Thermal, Sound, and Mechanical are forms of kinetic energy Potential Stored energy and energy of position Chemical & Nuclear energy are potential energy

Chemical Energy What holds atoms in molecules together is released by chemical reactions like burning wood Biomass, petroleum, and natural gas are examples of stored chemical energy

Nuclear Energy Energy stored in the nucleus of an atom Holds protons and neutrons together in an atom’s nucleus Powers the sun and nuclear power plants

Electrical Energy The movement of electrons through matter Electricity & lightning are forms of electrical energy

Thermal Energy The random motion or vibration of atoms in matter The faster the atoms vibrate the more heat energy they have Geothermal energy is an example of thermal energy

Petroleum is refined into gasoline Number one energy source in the U.S. Provides 37% of America’s total energy consumption. Saudia Arabia has the largest known reserves of me. My major use is for transportation.

Coal I generate 45.9 percent of the nation’s electricity I’m America’s most abundant source of energy Wyoming, West Virginia & Kentucky are states that produce me.

Natural Gas I heat more than half of the nation’s homes. I’m colorless and odorless. Chemical name is methane. Industry is my largest consumer in the U.S. I’m a cleaner burning fossil fuel.

Uranium I’m the nation’s third leading source for generating electricity. I’m presently being used in over 100 locations in the U.S. I supply about 21% of U.S. electricity. I was first used in 1957 to make electricity. The U.S. leads the world in production of electricity from me.

Hydroelectric Power I supply 5-10% of U.S. electricity, depending on the amount of rainfall. I’m limited to certain geographic areas of the U.S. I provide 16% of the world’s electricity. I’m being used in over 2,000 locations in the U.S. My facilities can disrupt wildlife & fish populations.

Biomass Methane gas can be made from me. Photosynthesis stores radiant energy in me. I get my energy from wood, garbage, and agricultural wastes. I can be used to generate electricity. Ethanol can be made from me and used as a transportation fuel. Burning me can produce air pollution.

Geothermal I produce less than one percent of U.S. Energy. I’m used mainly in western states. I can be used for home heating. My energy comes from the Earth’s core. My major use is the production of electricity. I get my energy as a result of radioactive decay.

Wind Most of my electricity is from Texas, Iowa, & western states. I convert my motion energy directly into electrical energy with no cost for the fuel. I produce no air pollution. My turbines operate about ¾ of the time. I produce almost 2% of U.S. electricity. I’m caused by uneven heating of the Earth’s surface.

Solar I’m not available at all hours of the day. I can be converted directly into electricity using photovoltaic cells. I’m great for water and home heating. I work better in some parts of the country. My energy is stored in fossil fuels. I’m free to use, but you have to purchase and maintain my equipment.
