WASTE WATER STATISTICS IN TURKEY Tülay AKICI Environmental Statistics Division State Institute of Statistics, TURKEY April,

DESCRIPTION The State Institute of Statistics (SIS), the centralized system for Turkey’s official statistics has infrastructure for compilation, evaluation, analysis and publication of statistical data concerning the economic, social and environmental structure of the country. SIS has been dealing with the environmental statistics according to framework of the OECD core set of environmental data and indicators, which covers three parts as pressure, state and response. The UN/ECE environmental statistics classifications, CORINAIR and IPCC guidelines on the environmental topics have been considered.

SIS creates environmental statistics using the following methods: Administrative registers which are suitable for the creation on environmental statistics and indicators data from monitoring networks (i.e. water quality is gathered from the monitoring studies carried out by he General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works) Census Surveys

Experience on Water Statistics SIS has started to collect statistics on environment since 1990 and specifically for water since First study in this field is a survey in manufacturing industry establishments, then surveys on thermal power plants, mining establishments and municipalities, rural drinking water and irrigation water abstraction studies followed it. Within these surveys water abstraction by resources, treatment facilities and wastewater discharges are surveyed as well as current and investment expenditures related with the water activities.

Surveys on wastewater discharges (table 1)(table 1) Data availability on water topic

Table 1. Wastewater generated by sectors (million m 3 )

The total amount of wastewater discharged from the public sewage network increased by 67% between 1995 and And for manufacturing industry, the data between 1995 and 1997 seems fluctuating as different establishments with different capacities reply to the questionnaires each year.

Table 2. Population Connected to Sewage Network and Treatment plant (%)

There is considerable increase in population connected to public sewage treatment plants after While 8.94% of population was connected to public sewage treatment plant in 1995, this ratio increased to 16.8% in Also there is a considerable increase in the population connected to sewage network with 75.3% in 2001.

Table 3. Wastewater Treatment (million m 3 )

In 2001 there were 112 public wastewater traetment plants with 2.3 billions m3/year capacity but only million m3/year wastewater was treated in these plants. This means that 51 % of the total capacity was used. For independent and industrial wastewater treatment plants this ratio is 62.2 % and 54.8 % respectively in Around 44.3 % of public wastewater were discharged after treatment in And for manufacturing industry 22.4% of wastewater were discharged after treatment in In 2001 there were 112 public wastewater traetment plants with 2.3 billions m3/year capacity but only million m3/year wastewater was treated in these plants. This means that 51 % of the total capacity was used. For independent and industrial wastewater treatment plants this ratio is 62.2 % and 54.8 % respectively in Around 44.3 % of public wastewater were discharged after treatment in And for manufacturing industry 22.4% of wastewater were discharged after treatment in 1997.
