1 Improvement of the Polish data collection system on water and waste water statistics Project co-financed by the European Commission under the Grant Agreement No. 71301.2005.001-2005.020

2 The pilot project on the improvement of water and waste water statistics was carried out in the period June 2005 – July 2006 by the Central Statistical Office – Agriculture and Environment Statistics Division and Services Statistics Division.

3 completing and/or improving As a part of the pilot project work was carried out aimed at completing and/or improving these statistical variables (given in the “Inland Waters” section of the JQ), which - as a result of taken actions – proved to be determinable or estimable.

4 In Poland the main source of data on water and waste water management are annual statistical surveys carried out by the Central Statistical Office based on the following reports: è water and waste water management and pollutants loads in industrial enterprises (OS-3), è water withdrawal for irrigation in agriculture and forestry as well as filling fish ponds (OS-4), è municipal and rural waste water treatment plants (OS-5), è water supply systems and public sewerage systems (M-06), è statistics of gminas; a part – housing and municipal management related to water supply systems and sewerage systems of gminas (SG-01).

5 n When performing the pilot project, in addition to the data obtained in the course of the statistical surveys, the results of the National Population and Housing Census 2002 as well as other non-statistical data were used. n Actions were also taken aimed at harmonizing the Polish terminology in regard to sewage sludge from waste water treatment plants with EU standards and the requirements provided for in the JQ. Possibilities were also identified to obtain data on the quality of waste waters.

6 As a result of work and activities carried out as a part of the pilot project the following statistical variables for the needs of the section “Inland Waters” of the JQ were specified: F volume of water abstraction by households with separation of surface and underground abstraction (table 2.1),  national population connected to public water supply and urban waste water collecting system (table 4),  national population to independent waste water collecting system (table 4),

7  national population connected to waste water treatment plants by type of WWTP (table 4),  water use by self supply domestic sector (table 3.1),  volumes of reused water (table 2.2),  water use by public water supply for cooling purposes (table 3.1),  volume of water abstraction and water use by livestock (improvement of data on agriculture, forestry, fishing - table 2.1 and table 3.1)  losses of water during transport (table 3.1).
