M. Gilchriese Overview of Production Plan for Pixel Global Support and Disk Support Rings M. G. D. Gilchriese Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory February 18, 2002

M. Gilchriese 3 Production Overview Disk Support Rings and Global Support Frame are U.S. responsibilities. Procurement of these items will be done via Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory(LBNL). Documents referenced in ATL-IP-QA- 0010(“ATLAS PIXEL DISK SUPPORT RING AND GLOBAL SUPPORT PRODUCTION PLAN “) and included as appendices to ATL-IP-QA are provided to the production vendors.

M. Gilchriese 4 Disk Support Rings Procurement is divided into three Phases(I, II and III) and two contracts(I+II and III) –Phase I – produce C-channels that meet specifications –Phase II – produce one pre-production ring –Phase III – fabricate production rings, currently six A fixed-price contract for Phase I and Phase II was placed in November 2001 calling for completion of Phase I by March 7, 2002 and completion of Phase II by April 4, We are on schedule to complete Phase II and inspection of the pre-production ring by the end of April, at which point the production contract would be let with the goal of completing fabrication by October 2002.

M. Gilchriese 5 Global Support Frame The procurement of the Global Support Frame is planned to proceed in two major(possibly overlapping) phases. –Separate contract(or contracts) for the production of tooling –A contract for composite fabrication and assembly. –By doing so, we can benefit from the extensive and proven methods used in the construction of prototypes and likely reduce costs. Appendix D in ATL-IP-QA-0010(“ ATLAS Pixel Detector Global Support Structure Procurement and QC Plan”) has been provided some weeks ago to prospective composite vendors as part of a request for expressions of interest to bid and to advance the procurement process. We plan to begin the formal process to obtain bids just after this review.

M. Gilchriese 6 Baseline Schedule Key milestones from our baseline schedule established last Fall are given below. There is a substantial period of trial assembly, including machining of the Frame disk sections for insertion of the Disk Rings. And we had planned for a significant slack, about 7 months. W. Miller will present our current estimate of the schedule later.
