The Everyman Hero: A Good Teacher Tom Depew By Tom Depew

Tom Depew

Tom Depew - Biography Tom grew up in Ottawa, Ontario with his mother and two sisters, Gillian and Emily. They are 5 and 7 years older than he is, so when he was a kid he was pretty spoiled because he always got a lot of attention from his sisters. Tom’s mom put him into soccer and hockey when he was around 8 years old, and he kept playing those two sports every year, and eventually played both hockey and soccer for the Carleton Ravens teams. After going to high school in Ottawa at Lisgar High School, Tom went to Carleton University and completed an undergraduate degree in English. He then went to Ottawa U and completed teacher’s college, before returning to Carleton to do a master’s degree in English. After leaving Carleton, he worked at a Garden center for two years, and then began teaching in high school. He has worked at Nepean and Colonel By in the past, and is currently working at SRB High School where he teaches three English classes.

Tom Depew Here is a news article about Tom, when he was running a soccer camp with the Internationals Soccer Club Flyer about Soccer Camp Flyer about Soccer Camp

Opinion Piece Tom Depew is a good teacher. He is a good teacher because he gives food to his students, coaches sports teams, and treats his students well. Tom Depew is a good teacher. He is a good teacher because he gives food to his students, coaches sports teams, and treats his students well.

Opinion Piece First of all, Tom Depew is a good teacher because he brings food for his classes. In 2013 Tom cooked a batch of beets and brought it into his grade 9 english class so that students could see the side effects of eating beets. Some teachers don’t ever let students eat in the classroom at any time, let alone bring food for the students, but Tom knows that sometimes students are hungry and that it can be easier to concentrate when you’re not hungry. Also, he wanted to see how his students would react after they ate their portions of the beets. He brings food for his classes from time to time, and this is one of the things that makes him a good teacher.

Opinion Piece Second of all, Tom is a good teacher because he coaches sports teams. Tom coached the junior boys volleyball team and the senior girls soccer teams at Merivale in In 2013 there were some teacher strikes, and for a lot of the year sports were not running. When the strikes ended, not all teacher went back to coaching, but Tom was willing to take on two teams. Sometimes it made him really busy, and with coaching and marking and preparing lessons he would be up really late and get very tired, but he enjoyed doing the coaching anyway because he thought that students who enjoy playing sports at high school should get the chance. All of the coaching he does makes him a good teacher.

Opinion Piece Third of all, Tom is a good teacher because he treats his students well. He frequently lets his students play youtube clips during class, and he is usually pretty understanding and lenient about due dates. When students get to show random Youtube clips they are usually funny, and the whole class can enjoy them. With due dates, Tom could decide to give big late penalties or give 0s for late assignments, but he is normally willing to accept assignments after the due dates. Young people have a lot going on in their lives other than school assignments, and Tom understands this. Because of his understanding and patience, he is nice towards students, and that makes him a good teacher.

Opinion Piece So there are many reasons why Tom is a good teacher. If you are in his class, you can probably expect to get some free food once in a while, be able to play a funny video, or get a second chance on an assignment. Sure, maybe English class is really boring sometimes and you would rather be doing anything other than sitting in a tiny desk, but you have to be in school to make something of your life, and you should ask yourself: would class be easier with a different teacher?

Reflection Reading about Tom made me feel inspired because he is such a cool guy. It definitely made me a better person. It probably made me three times better than I was before, since he is so cool. Sometimes I found it frustrating because I am lazy and I don’t like to read very much. From Tom I have learned that beets make your pee red, which is pretty crazy. Overall, I think I would say my performance on this project was decent, because I got everything done, but I didn’t do anything extra at all, and I did it really quickly. I could have improved my performance by putting more time and effort into it. The next time I have a major assignment I will probably read the assignment sheet more carefully. Most of the instructions about what to do are usually easy to find on the instruction sheet. I am most proud of how I figured out how to make the hyperlink active with different text from the URL, because I don’t’ like how URLs appear on screens; they are so long and weird looking.
