Chapter 1 Design Portfolios

What is portfolio? A unique object of work A collection of artifacts that demonstrates your skills and abilities A unique personality that reflects who you are It identifies your strengths and weaknesses It is not a stack of projects crammed together but a cohesive organized display

Expectations are high! Your work is being reviewed by another designer You've got to spark their interest How it is organized says a lot about your organizational skills

Traditional portfolios Printed format Most interviewers like to see some work in person Size is important

Digital portfolios Complements the print portfolio CD or DVD – USB Thumb Drive Web site Shows you are up on technology Does not replace the traditional portfolio Broadens your reach and allows a less expensive means to distribute your portfolio

Most important body of work you will produce Your portfolio is the single most important instrument that will help you get a job. Take its development very seriously.

Chapter 2 Diversity of Portfolios

What sets you apart? Know your competition Your portfolio needs to be distinct and creative It should be polished with an attention to detail It should show that you take pride in your work

Know your competition Fierce competition One typo could turn someone off Laid-off designers Use only your best work Show work that says "I have the skills and creativity to be a benefit to your firm."

Assignment 1 Teams of 2-3 people, conduct Internet research and share your findings in an to me, and I'll forward to the class: Sample ID portfolios to study Example resumes and cover letters Interviewing tips Free fonts Job posting and recruiter websites 4-5 Job announcements you could apply for

Chapter 3 Knowing your audience

"If you want to get somewhere, you first must know where you are going."

How is a portfolio reviewed? The portfolio is a design project and will be evaluated first. How it presents, reads and its layout. Reviewers will be looking for something in particular. Know what the company does and have examples of that type of work in your portfolio. It's hard to say what your reviewer really wants to see – some may be looking for sketching, other for technical skills. To be safe, show a variety of skill sets. Generation Y vs. X and Baby Boomers…. Some will not be able to evaluate a digital portfolio for what it is – a sampling of your capabilities with technology.
