Bell-ringer 9/21 Think of different regions in America today (South, Midwest, East coast, etc). How do they differ from each other culturally?
Regions of the 1700’s New England (Massachusetts, Connecticut, etc.) Middle Colonies (Philadelphia, New York, etc.) South (North Carolina, Georgia, etc.)
Economy New England Climate- Cold, harsh winters Economy- small farms, livestock & lumber Middle Colonies Climate- warmer than New England Economy- larger, better farms South Climate- warm Economy- prosperous farming: tobacco, rice and indigo
Society Population New England Mostly European Middle class Colder climate=healthier living The South Mostly African American Poor, single European immigrants looking for work
Society Women (in all regions) Few rights: no property, no voting Household duties: cooking, gardening, etc. Men & Women depended on each other for sustaining the home (i.e. farming)
Society Community Life New England- Small towns Public education Churches Private property South- Slavery based economy (plantations) Population was spread apart far and wide How can being far apart affect community life?
