A: According to Confucius if all people followed, ren, or concern for others, and li, or appropriate behavior, then society would function best.

Confucius

“Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.” Confucius

Review Chapter 7, Section 3 Study Guide 14.What developed during the Song Dynasty that drew its basis from Confucianism? How was it similar/different from Confucianism? (pg. 178)?

Review Chapter 7, Section 3 Study Guide A: During the Song dynasty Neo- Confucianism developed. Like Confucianism, it taught proper behavior through methods such as discussion of what made human beings do bad things even if their basic nature was good. Unlike Confucianism, it emphasized spiritual matters that incorporated Buddhist and Daoist concepts about the meaning of life.

Review Chapter 7, Section 3 Study Guide 15.What is a bureaucracy (pg. 178)? What are some types of jobs in the U.S.A. that could be labeled part of our bureaucracy (Your brain, ask your parents)? A: A bureaucracy is all of the government officials that were hired rather than elected. In the U.S.A. the President’s advisors could be considered an example of the bureaucracy.

Bureaucracy

Review Chapter 7, Section 3 Study Guide 16.What did it mean to work in civil service? How did a person become a civil servant in the Song Dynasty? Was it easy or hard? Why? (pg. 178) A: Working in civil service means to work as a government official. In order to become a civil servant in the Song Dynasty a person had to pass a series of written examinations on Confucianism and related ideas. It was very hard because students had to memorize entire Confucian texts.

Review Chapter 7, Section 3 Study Guide 17.(Short Answer) Why did people want to become scholar- officials (pgs )?

Review Chapter 7, Section 3 Study Guide A: People wanted to become scholar-officials for many reasons. One reason was that scholar-officials were considered elite members of society. As elite members they were allowed to perform many important jobs in the government. Also people admired them for their knowledge and ethics. Additionally, they were subject to reduced penalties for breaking the law. Lastly, many scholar-officials became wealthy as a result of expensive gifts given to them from people seeking their aid. These are the reasons why people would want to become scholar- officials.

Review Chapter 7, Section 3 Study Guide 18.Would you have tried to become a scholar-official? Why or why not? (pgs )A: I would not have tried to become a scholar-official because there was so little chance that I would be able to pass. I wouldn’t want to study for so many years and then feel like I had wasted all that time if I failed.

Review Chapter 7, Section 3 Study Guide 19.Why was the civil service system important to the Song government (pg. 179)? The civil service system was a major factor in the stability of the Song government. The people who worked in it were talented, intelligent people.
