Chapter 8: China Learning Target 7.20
Buddhism in China Chapter 8: China Learning Target 7.20

Learning Target 7.20 I can describe the reunification of China under the Tang Dynasty and reasons for the cultural diffusion of Buddhism.

Buddhism in China Buddhism teaches that the way to find truth is to give up all desires for things. The religion was brought to China by traders and missionaries. It attracted many Chinese seeking comfort and peace during and after China’s civil wars. It spread throughout China; many rulers feared Buddhism’s growing influence and worried that Chinese traditions and customs would be lost (including Confucianism).

Spread of Buddhism Cultural diffusion is the process of spreading ideas, languages, and customs from one culture to another. Chinese Buddhists brought their religion to Korea in the A.D. 300s. It attracted many followers in Korea. Buddhism later spread from Korea to the nearby islands of Japan.

Neo-Confucianism Tang and Song Dynasty rulers worked to bring Confucius ideas back to a respected position in Chinese society. One reason this new Confucianism was created was to stop the growing influence of Buddhism. Neo-Confucianism taught… You should be concerned about this world and the afterlife. You should be active in society and help others. You should remember to respect your ancestors. You would find peace of mind if you followed the teachings of Confucius.
