 History  "Five Points of a New Architecture“  Louis Sullivan  Czech and Slovak functionalism  Danish functionalism  Adolph Loos

 In 1920 modern theories about design and architecture emerged  They were called the Modernist  New theories were calling for function without any unnecessary ornaments  Architects and designers like Walter Gropius and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe,...designed several buildings following these principles

 1) reinforced concrete column frame  2) flat roof with a terrace  3) free interior plan  4) horizontal strip windows  5) composition of the freed facade

Basic factsBasic principles  He believed that his new, modern architectural forms would raise the quality of life for lower classes.  His Villas (1922), built from large blocks of cell-like individual apartments stacked one on top of one another.  In the plans were included living room, bedrooms, kitchen, and a garden terrace.  simplicity  function  lack of ornamentation

Louis Sullivan is famous for the phrase :  Form ever follows function L. Wright is also known as an exemplar of functional design. Scott building Chicago  the form of a building should be determined by its practical considerations.  Practical considerations such as: usage, material, and structure. Functionalism had the strongest influence in Germany, Czechoslovakia, USSR and Netherlands.

 In the mid-1930s, functionalism was discussed as: an aesthetic approach.  The idea of functionalism was famous for the lack of ornamentation.  Functionalism became to be associated with the cheap commercial buildings.  For 70 years the influential American architect P. Johnson said: " Where form comes from I don’t know, but it has nothing at all to do with the functional or sociological aspects of our architecture".

 Functionalism was a dominant architectonic style in former Czechoslovakia.  In It was a result of fascination first by industrial development and later by an effort "to create a new man and new society"  during the period of the socialism functionalism was formulated by the Club of architects in Prague  In 1960s and 1970s the position of functionalism was dominant and almost exclusive.

 Danish Functionalists focused primarily on functionality at the expense of aesthetics with these characteristics:  straight angles  flat roofs  minimum of decoration  A fine example of the Danish Functionalist style is Aarhus University designed by the C.F. Moller
