Definition „Impressionism is a light, spontaneous manner of painting which began in France as a reaction against the restrictions and conventions of the dominant Academic art. Its naturalistic and down-to-earth treatment of its subject matter, most commonly landscapes, has its roots in the French Realism.“ (http://www.artcyclopedia.com/history/impressionism.html)Academic art Realism

Claude Monet, Impression, Sunrise Oil on canvas, 1873

A short-lived Movement Centred in France, 1860's to 1880's In the late 1860s, three artists – Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Camille Pissaro - formed the habit of going to sit on the banks of the Seine and Oise to paint the countryside. Their main interest was the reflection of light on the river; it seemed to be constantly moving and giving life to the water. The many colours revealed in the reflections gave them the idea of painting light by applying bands of opposing colours – they subconsciously applied the theory of complementary colours

First exhibition From April 15 to May 15, 1874 at the photographer Nadar's former studio at 35 Boulevard des Capucines 165 works were displayed Led by the French artists Monet, Degas, Renoir, Pissarro and Berthe Morisot - they called themselves the Anonymous Society of Painters, Sculptors, Engravers, etc. The critical response was mixed. Monet and Cézanne received the harshest attacks. The exhibition is considered to be „the beginning of Modern ART“

Impressionism specifics Themes: everyday scenes from the world artists knew, mostly nature Camille Pissaro, Apple Blossoms, Eragny 1900

Impressionism specifics Colour: complementary, vibrant and light colours, sometimes mixed straight on the canvas, in contrast with the darker palettes of traditional art Claude Monet, Antibes seen from the Salis Gardens, 1888

Impressionism specifics Brushwork: quick, spontanious as they tried to capture the fleeting moment Berthe Morisot, Summer's Day 1879

Claude Monet born on November 14, 1840, in Paris, France enrolled in the Academie Suisse after an art exhibition in 1874, a critic insultingly dubbed Monet's painting style "Impression," since it was more concerned with form and light than realism, and the term stuck. Monet struggled with depression, poverty and illness throughout his life. died in 1926.
