A short-lived Movement Centred in France, 1860's to 1880's In the late 1860s, three artists – Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and Camille Pissaro - formed the habit of going to sit on the banks of the Seine and Oise to paint the countryside. Their main interest was the reflection of light on the river; it seemed to be constantly moving and giving life to the water. The many colours revealed in the reflections gave them the idea of painting light by applying bands of opposing colours – they subconsciously applied the theory of complementary colours

Claude Monet born on November 14, 1840, in Paris, France enrolled in the Academie Suisse after an art exhibition in 1874, a critic insultingly dubbed Monet's painting style "Impression," since it was more concerned with form and light than realism, and the term stuck. Monet struggled with depression, poverty and illness throughout his life. died in 1926.
