ORION ®plus IR Detector [ Compact. Durable. Ingenious. ] When you need more versatility….

© MSA 2006 [Your Safety. Our Mission.] ORION ®plus IR Detector [ Overview ] Extra bright LEDs Fits comfortably in hand Separate information display Extremely robust construction High contrast, large display Simple operation

© MSA 2006 [Your Safety. Our Mission.] ORION ®plus IR Detector [ What’s new?]  More IR sensor options  More toxic sensors options  New communication software  Instrument also available without IR sensor

© MSA 2006 [Your Safety. Our Mission.] ORION ®plus IR Detector [ How does it work?]  Our dual-beam IR sensor  Does NOT detect H2!! IR Source Window Detector Gas inlet Gas outlet The sapphire window protects the source and detector against corrosive gases (Cl 2, NH 3, etc.). The source emits energy which is measured by the detector. Detector measures the energy not absorbed by target gas at a specific wave length.

© MSA 2006 [Your Safety. Our Mission.] The need for IR CO 2 …  CO 2 measurement by O 2 displacement? The answer is NO!  Facts:  CO 2 is heavier than oxygen  TWA value CO 2 = 5000 ppm (0.5% Vol)  0.5% CO 2 = 0.1% O 2 displacement (20.8% of Air)  O 2 alarm = 19.5%  = 1.3% O 2 * 100/20.8 = 6.2% Air  19.5% O 2 = 6.2% CO 2 (= 62,000 ppm)  When O 2 alarm triggers, CO 2 concentration can be lethal (>62,000 ppm) in the breathing zone!

© MSA 2006 [Your Safety. Our Mission.] [Effects of CO 2 ] Effects of CO 2 4-6% Vol% 6-8 Vol% 8-10 Vol% 20 Vol% 0.5 Vol% ppm ppm ppm ppm 5000 ppm Headaches, dizziness, blood pressure change in veins and brain Paralyzing effect as if curare has been used Extinguishing of a burning candle, spasms, rapid unconsciousness, death Deadly within a few seconds TWA Value

© MSA 2006 [Your Safety. Our Mission.] The need for IR LEL or IR Vol%…  Crude Oil  Heavier hydrocarbons (HCs) in inert atmosphere  Difficult to detect with catalytic sensor  (Petro-) Chemical Industries  Comb. gases in presence of high conc. H 2 S  HCs  Welding & cutting pipelines (N 2 purging)  Shipping  General HCs (cargo inertization with CO 2 )  Fiberglass & cabling  Combustible gases in presence of silicones, silicates (poisoning)

© MSA 2006 [Your Safety. Our Mission.] ORION ®plus IR Detector [Where to sell?]  Light & Cable Industry  IRLEL/O 2 /CO  Law Enforcement  PH 3 /NH 3 /O 2 /LEL  Refineries  IR LEL/O 2 /H 2 S/SO 2  Sewage  IRCO 2 /LEL/O 2 /H 2 S/CO  Fire Service  LEL/O 2 /CO/H 2 S  LEL/O 2 /CO/HCN  Water Purification  LEL/O 2 /O 3 /H 2 S  Chemical  LEL/IRVol%/O 2  Shipping  IR HC/LEL/O 2  Utilities  IR Vol%/LEL/O 2  Breweries  IRCO 2 /LEL/O 2 /CO  IRCO 2 /LEL/O 2 /CO/NH3

© MSA 2006 [Your Safety. Our Mission.] Why IR? [IR versus Catalytic Combustion]  More expensive but offers:  Faster response time  More specific  Reduced risk of sensor poisoning  Will also detect in inert atmospheres  Choice of up to 100% Vol readout  Increased sensor life  Less maintenance

© MSA 2006 [Your Safety. Our Mission.] ORION ®plus IR Detector [ more IR sensor options]  Combustible IR sensors  CH 4 methane0 – 100 Vol%  CH 4 methane0 – 25 Vol%  C 3 H 8 propane0 – 100 Vol.%  C 3 H 8 propane0 – 100 % LEL  C 4 H 10 butane0 – 100 % LEL  General HC sensor  C 4 H 10 butane0 – 25 Vol.%  C 4 H 10 butane0 – 100 Vol.%  CO 2 IR sensors  CO 2 carbon dioxide0 – 10 Vol. %  CO 2 carbon dioxide0 – 50 Vol. %

© MSA 2006 [Your Safety. Our Mission.] ORION ®plus IR Detector [more Echems] GasRange Resolution  O % Vol. 0.1 % Vol.  CO ppm 1 ppm  H 2 S ppm 1 ppm  HCN ppm 1 ppm  CI ppm 0.1 ppm  NH ppm 1 ppm  SO ppm 0.1 ppm  NO ppm 0.1 ppm  CIO ppm 0.02 ppm  PH ppm < 0.05 ppm  O ppm 0.02 ppm  COCI ppm 0.02 ppm *Use designated regulators and short PTFE/PU tubing (1-2”) for reactive gases!!

© MSA 2006 [Your Safety. Our Mission.] ORION ®plus IR Detector [Sampling]  New PTFE probe and 5’ PTFE line  Not recommended for sampling of reactive gases (Cl 2, NH 3, O 3 etc.).  Other lengths sampling line (PU) without probe are available for non-reactive gases (604018).

© MSA 2006 [Your Safety. Our Mission.] ORION ®plus IR Detector [FAQs]  How many Echem sensors can be installed?  2 toxic gas sensors and 1 oxygen sensor  Can the user change the sensors?  Yes, with the new ORIONplus Link software; MSA service training is highly recommended!  Can the Galaxy Test System be used?  Not for now, for various reasons (fitting, software, corrosive gases, etc.)

© MSA 2006 [Your Safety. Our Mission.] ORION ®plus IR Detector [more FAQs]  Can an ‘exotic’ sensor or IR LEL be installed in the existing ORIONplus?  No, too cumbersome and costly  Why is the IR sensor different?  Protects the lamp and sensor against corrosive gases (sapphire window). Life time of IR sensor will decrease dramatically without this protection  Why is the inlet changed?  Current inlet reacts with corrosive gases

© MSA 2006 [Your Safety. Our Mission.] ORION ®plus IR Detector [more FAQs]  Will the IR LEL detect Hydrogen?  No, H2 is ‘invisible’ to IR light (no absorption)  Can the 20L response factors be applied on the IR sensor?  No, the IR technology works differently, is more specific to the gas  Why would I need 50 Vol% CO2??  This is mainly used in the process industry
