3. ALTAIR 5X PID What is a VOC?
Volatile organic compounds, or VOCs are organic chemical compounds whose composition makes it possible for them to evaporate under normal indoor atmospheric conditions of temperature and pressure*
Many compounds are toxic at very low levels…well before they near combustible levels
Example: Benzene
Occupational carcinogen (Toxic) & Combustible
NIOSH Short-term exposure limit = 1 ppm
LEL = 1.2% VOL or 12,000 ppm

5. ALTAIR 5X PID Detection Technology
Photoionization Detector
Photo = Light (UV Light for PID sensor)
Ionization = Energize molecules to lose electrons
Detects flow of electrons
More electrons = Higher concentration of gas
Broad Spectrum – Does not differentiate gases
Indicates the presence of many compounds
Does not determine what the compound is
Only works for compounds with lower Ionization Potential (IP) than PID lamp energy

6. ALTAIR 5X PID Detection Technology
VOC molecule absorbs energy from the PID lamp in the ionization chamber
VOC molecule is “excited” and loses an electron (e-) while becoming positively charged
The VOC is now ionized and the detector measures the flow of electrons
Sensor readings are directly proportional to number of VOC molecules ionized
