Essential Question What changes did the Industrial Revolution bring?

What happened to Europe? The Industrial Revolution brought many far reaching changes to Europe

How did cities change? The Growth of Cities European cities grow dramatically… especially in Britain Cities become the home of industry

What happened economically? Rise of Capitalism People doing whatever they can to make money How?  building factories  building machines  buying raw materials  producing goods  finding markets No matter what – it’s the people controlling production, not the government

How did business change? New Business Organizations PARTNERSHIPS CORPORATIONS Two or more people put their money together in hopes of making a profit Create an organization of investors and all share the wealth

How did the workers feel? Rise of the Working Class More factories = more workers needed Problems:  Poor wages  Dangerous, unsafe conditions  Long work weeks (16 hours a day, 6 days a week)  No laws against child labor But… workers made more money in the factory than they would have on the farm

What did workers do? Rise of Trade Unions Unhappy workers couldn’t fight the factory on their own… So, they formed TRADE UNIONS As association of workers who unite to improve wages, benefits, working conditions, rights, etc…

What was socialism? Development of Socialism Workers rarely shared in the wealth of capitalism A new idea emerged during this time called SOCIALISM Government should own all the MEANS OF PRODUCTION (factories, land, money, resources) This way, no one is rich…. and no one is poor – everyone shares in the wealth of the society
