The Concept of Imperialism Western Civ II ISMs Unit

Occurs when one nation dominates the political, economic and social lives of another group of people. Using pages , list the many ways in which industry aided the growth of imperialism. What roles do nationalism and religion play in imperialism?

Definition Imperialism: One country’s domination of the political, economic and social life of another country.

Three Types of Imperial Control 1. Colony: –a territory ruled directly by a foreign country 2. Protectorate: –a territory that has its own government, but has its policies guided by a foreign country 3. Sphere of influence: –a region of a country in which a foreign country holds exclusive investment or trading rights

Imperialism in the 19th century arose from three key factors:

Reason #1: Nationalism European countries competed with one another for colonies. Nations would use their militaries to expand the borders of their colonies. Countries could claim the same territory, leading to conflict.

Reason #2: The Industrial Revolution Nations faced a huge demand for raw materials. They also needed expanded markets for their manufactured goods. Imperialism also provided a nation with labor and taxes.

Reason #3: Feelings of Racial and Cultural Superiority Catholic and Protestant missionaries were sent to colonies to convert people to Christianity. Colonial officials imposed western customs and traditions on conquered peoples in order “to spread civilization.” Social Darwinism (“survival of the fittest”) was used to explain differences between human beings and to justify imperialism.
