Founded by John Bird and Gordon Roddick in September 1991, The Big Issue is a magazine in the United Kingdom that is edited by professionals journalists and sold by homeless people. The Big Issue was set up as a social business to give homeless people the chance to make an income. It campaigns on behalf of the homeless people. It allows homeless people to voice their views and opinions. WHAT DOES ‘THE BIG ISSUE’ DO?

Up-market 75% of our readers are ABC1 - 44% male readership and 56% female Big Issue readers are 179% more likely than the national average to be earning over £50, % own their own home. 73% have taken 2 or more foreign holidays in the last 3 years. In June 1993, The Big Issue went weekly, and regional sister titles were later established in Manchester (The Big Issue in the North), Glasgow (The Big Issue Scotland) and Cardiff (The Big Issue Cymru), Bristol (The Big Issue South West) and Birmingham (The Big Issue Midlands). Subsequently editions were also launched in Sydney - Australia, Cape Town - South Africa and Los Angeles - USA. The Big Issue is a founder member of the International Network of Street Papers (INSP), which links up similar magazines from all over the world. HOW POPULAR IS ‘THE BIG ISSUE’?

The Big Issue delivers to a highly sought-after audience who are extremely difficult to reach through traditional media. There is low duplication with similar titles in the marketplace. For example, 96% of Big Issue readers do not read The Independent, 94% do not read Time Out and 87% do not read The Guardian. WHAT DOES ‘THE BIG ISSUE’ PRODUCE?
