Thermal Energy Transfer “How Heat Moves”

What is Thermal Energy? Thermal energy (we often call this HEAT) is: The amount of movement of the particles that make up a substance. You probably remember this from earlier in the year. The particles in a solid: VIBRATE The particles in a liquid: SLIDE The particles in a gas: ZOOM!

How Heat Moves Thermal energy can move from one place to another in three ways: Conduction Convection Radiation Thermal Energy will ALWAYS move from ________________ to _______________ HOTCOLD Thermal Energy will STOP moving when it reaches ______________________. EQUILIBRIUM

CONDUCTION Conduction is: The transfer of heat by direct contact. No matter moves. In our “possum” model, conduction is shown: When the stuffed animal moves from person to person to person. HEAT ENERGY. MOLECULES. The stuffed animal represents: The people passing it represent: Draw it!

CONVECTION Convection is: The transfer of heat by currents within a fluid. Matter moves. In our “possum” model, convection is shown: When the stuffed animal is carried by one person from one side to another. HEAT ENERGY. ONE MOLECULE, TRAVELING. The stuffed animal represents: The person carrying it represents: Draw it! Remember: liquids or gases

RADIATION Radiation is: The transfer of thermal energy by electromagnetic waves. No matter is needed! In our “possum” model, radiation is shown: When the stuffed animal is thrown across the room. HEAT ENERGY. NONE!!! The stuffed animal represents: The people passing it represent: Draw it!

Conduction is in solids. Convection is in fluids (liquids and gases) Radiation is through anything that will allow it to pass.

Insulators A material that blocks or reduces the flow of heat, electricity, or sound. Brainstorm some ideas of materials that are GOOD insulators:

Conductors A material that transfers heat or electricity. Brainstorm some ideas of materials that are GOOD conductors:
