Google’s History Two PhD students at Stanford University, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, founded Google in They began in a friend’s garage in Menlo Park, California. L to R: Schmidt, Brin and Page Google’s first server

Instead of counting how many times search terms appeared on a webpage as traditional search engines did at the time, Page and Brin theorized about a better system that analyzed the relationships between websites to determine page rank.

BackRub to Googol to Google It was originally called “BackRub” because the system checked a site’s backlinks to help determine page importance. Later the name was changed to Google which originated from a misspelling of the word “googol”, the number one followed by one hundred zeroes. This was to represent the amount of information the search engine was to handle. 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,0 00,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,0 00,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000
