Sport-Ident 101 Barry McCashin Edmonton Overlanders Orienteering Club January 22, 2006 Edmonton AB © BGMcC 2006 Part II B Programming with SI Manager 40 slides

Part II B Programming SI Stations use SI Manager v9.8 (ver4,6 stations) writes information to the control: task (function), ID #, date, time, on/off time (ver 4 hardware)

EOOC SI Stations Have two models Ver4 (older) n=48 Ver7 (new)n=60 Power consumption much lower on ver7 and this affects how we program them for an event

Operation Modes for v4 Stations Competition Mode: programming usually done night before event Program ON time and OFF time When finish programming, goes to sleep mode (25% power) Turns ON at time (100% power) and OFF later (0% power).

Competition Mode 1: Significance of Time On:OFF In sleep mode, consumes power at 25% of rate when is ON (100% power) Can program unit to come on 10 minutes before Race Start Time + Saves battery power - not sure if it will come on !

Competition Mode 2: May have power on full at 0800h when vettors are placing in the field (costs batteries) or have power on just before race start Even in sleep mode, station will respond to an SI punch (beep & record data) but takes longer for station to respond to a punch inserted (10s vs 1s) Can put controls out in sleep mode and vettors can punch but you should have recently tested that each unit will turn on at time ON.

Competition Mode 3: When in sleep mode, does not respond to a magnet to turn on or to a purple OFF stick; Does respond to an SI punch (slow) Can also read programming with a Master Station/PC

Training Mode 1: Used for training; gives an approximate time stamp; not an absolute date/time Stations programmed in Training Mode do not turn on at a set time Turn on with a magnet swipe (show) Turns off after preset time (e.g. 2h) or with a purple OFF Stick

Training Mode 2: IF unit has a Real Time Clock (RTC), will print the real time/date on an SI punch (ver7’s have a RTC) IF no RTC (ver4’s), time is mm:ss after the magnet swipe on Mode used for the Master Station and the Download Station at a meet

Training Mode 3: If just want relative time for training Program controls to stay on for 2h Lay all controls out in a row and quickly sweep a magnet across the row to turn them on (difference of 1-2 s in time 0) Set controls in field and run around course (see Userguide training 1.6.pdf)

Programming Modes for an SI Meet (ver4): Competition Mode: (to get a date/time stamp) All controls Special controls: start, finish, check, clear Training Mode: (no time stamp needed) Master Station Download Station

Station Activation for Programming (ver4) Turn on a station with a magnet If was programmed in Training Mode, will stay on for Training Duration (h) If was programmed in Competition Mode, stays on 3’ to allow for reading or programming, then shuts off. If program On/Off, goes to sleep mode

SI Manager 9.8

Event, New event

Enter name, date, time Name dd/mm/yyyyy hh:mm:ss

Settings, Serial Port Master station is plugged into computer, need set communication up

Port Settings Com 1, 2 or 3 usually

SI Station, Prepare, Training To configure Master or Download Stations

Programming panel:Training Training Mode SN,HW, SW of last station read Battery date, Power now/after Always Full Mode Parameters To be written In last box read Directly mode can Write to a station, Read current values or turn it off

Quick Mode writes date, time,on,off Does not write Task or Code# May not delete history stored in memory Always use Full Mode to Program controls; erases data stored in Station (i.e. SI punches from last event) can also clear this memory with PPL stick “Clear Backup” Full Mode vs Quick Mode

Task List Caution: you can change a Master Station to be a Control (it will not read SI punches then) The ONLY time read/write Directly is when looking at the Master station wired to the PC

Battery level Now and after the event you are programming Date and power level when battery installed Always use Full Mode: Quick Mode does not write the task or the Code Number (used to make duplicate stations)

Signals Button Normally would not disable the beep or LED

Read/Write Mode: Directly: writes to Master Stn wired to the PC Master: writes to a Station coupled to the Master stn (normally use in Master Mode to program controls)

SI station, Prepare, Competition Mode Now are going to program v4 controls

Competition Mode Is your PC’s clock accurate? Competition Mode for most stations at an event

Competition Mode Panel Time check button (new) Time now, last data written, time ON, Off, working time Read the station coupled to Master Station Master Mode now

Power on to SI Station (v4) Use magnet sweep to wake up station (beeps on, full power) Will be active for 3 minutes then shut down; read/program within this time After program written, beeps OFF Station is in Sleep mode (25% power consumption over full on rate) waiting to turn on

Sleep Mode Station will respond to SI punch but may take 10s to beep (immediate beep when 100% on) In sleep mode, can read Station program via Master unit + PC

Programming: Inductive Coupling Use coupling rod to connect Master and other station (some units do not need rod; suggest to use it) Turn on (magnet) Master and Control to be programmed Invert station over master station and read or write information (Master Mode)

Control Code Numbers Number ranges for different Tasks: Start Boxes: 1-9 Special Functions: (Master, finish, check, clear) Normal Controls:

After read Control 255 Last program was 3h on, control #255 Battery level now Will change to be written to Control #31 with new time, on/off

After Write Control 31 Battery level after event What was written to station #31 Ready to write #32 with same on/off time

Protocol Report This report shows the log file of all programming done under this event on this PC: A valuable check to see if you got the correct on and off times; shows battery level, Serial Number of unit, Control Code # Print it and examine it before controls are placed in the field

V4 Control Station On/Off Prog Mode-(Power) Respond to Magnet On ? Training - (off)yes Competition - (off)yes Competition - (sleep)no Note: EOOC has 50 old model BSF4 - respond to magnet On Have 60 new model BSF7D - turn on with a punch or an Off Stick

V4 Control Station On/Off Prog Mode-(Power) Respond to Purple OFF Stick? Training - (on)yes Competition - (on)no Competition - (sleep)no

Programming Controls Goes very quickly (< 1h) Always use Full Mode to erase data from last event stored in controls Program duplicates for start, finish, check and clear (at least 8) Program some spare controls (maybe 10). Want to do all programming at the same time to avoid PC clock drift problems.

New Ver7/8 Controls-1 Have very low power consumption in sleep mode (are never off as v4 stations are) Have a real time clock (RTC) that keeps very good time Can program in Training Mode once with ID# and duration on (e.g. 4h) Turn on when insert a Finger punch and stay on for duration (ver4 units turn on with magnet)

New Ver7/8 Controls-2 Program in Training mode once and use with that ID# for months; unit turns on when vettor punches it. Before use, check clock synchronized with PC or the Time Master Station Provides time/date info + control ID to finger stick when inserted Have a LCD on back that can use to synchronize stop watches

Practical SI Manager Follow Exercise 2 and use SI Manager to program Controls for a test event. Will do on computer and project onto the screen will program v4 controls in Competition Mode and v7 controls in Training Mode
