What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? Evaluation question three Eden Goodall

Once a film is made, it needs to be distributed (for cinema / DVD release etc.) by a distribution company that has experience of marketing & distributing films that are similar to your film. As a group we decided that our film is an mainstream film, mainly because it is a high budget film with big celebrities that are a combination of British and American. The production company we are using is called ‘PGSC’ productions, which is an mainstream production company. We have major elements of a mainstream film as we will be purchasing merchandise that will be available to purchase at the cinema, as well as on the films website and social media sites. The genre of the film is typical for a mainstream audience because it is a psychological thriller and follows the same type of story as famous thriller films like ‘Fight Club’. However, we don’t really feature any special effects throughout our film because we want the audience to be more focused on the main character and his life, the narrative plays a big part in this. We have a large marketing campaign, it is of a high budget as we will be promoting it on huge English chat shows like Alan Carr Chatty Man and The Graham Norton show, where the main stars will go on and talk about the film and show exclusive clips. Also, we will be going more low budget by using things like Facebook and Twitter to advertise. There will be large advertising campaigns as the posters will be plastered on billboards. Finally, we will have the talent of the film attending awards ceremonies, so that they can get the word out through interviews with the media, this will help because a large audience will see these award ceremonies. It Is different to a independent film because it isn’t a low budget film and also the type of actors we are using are big hollywood stars. We are also using huge promotion opportunities and the heavy promotion will lead to it being in bigger cinemas.

Mainstream FilmsIndependent Films  Medium -Big budget  Big stars – well known  Film genre & content attracts a wide mainstream audience  Special Effects – ‘spectacle’  High production values  High profile marketing campaign (trailers, billboard, posters, large viral campaigns, TV IV’s, awards etc.) For example: Universal; Paramount (Shutter Island); New Line Cinema (Se7en).  Low budget  New, emerging talent  Genre & content more attracted to a niche audience (small or UK etc.)  No expensive special effects – character & narrative drives the film  Production values reflect low budget  Small marketing campaign (viral marketing, website, niche media texts, festivals & awards) For examples: Optimum Releasing (Kill List); Lionsgate (The Holding); Revolver (Kidulthood); Pathe (Adulthood), Difference between Mainstream and Independent

The type of film distribution companies that will distribute our film Universal, Paramount (shutter Island) and New Line Cinema (Se7en), this is mainly because these are the biggest film distribution companies and they often produce films much like our film (examples shown above). Our film is different to the other films produced by these companies because we feature different stars, we don’t feature anyone as A list as Leonardo DiCaprio who stars in Shutter Island. Paramount produce a wide variety of films, as do all the companies, but for example paramount also distribute the film Anchor- man which is a comedy and stars comedic actors like Will Ferrell and Steve Carell. Our film would be distributed Internationally, with film premiers all over the world that all the stars of the film would attend. After the premiers it will be shown in major cinemas, for example it would be shown in the odeon and cineworld in the UK which are often part of multiplex’s, it will also be shown in independent cinemas too. The film would get marketed to target audience, by putting major adverts during major television events, for example the xfactor final, where a whole ad break would be dedicated to the film trailer, this is so that a large audience will see trailer. The only problem we have is that the film is a 15 so it would have to be shown after 9pm. It will also have huge billboards, near major roads in the US so that people will see the poster as they are driving home from work for example. The type of box office projection that we would be looking at is the one similar to ‘Shutter Island’ and that made $294,804,195 in the box office world wide and was released to over 3,000+ cinemas and was open in the box office for a total of 16 weeks.
