(1/2) We are open –8 AM to 5 PM Monday to Thursday (4 PM on Friday) - Happy hour 5 PM to 7 PM Monday to Thursday Loans (with your student ID card) –10 books, 2 periodicals for up to 2 weeks, one renewal if not reserved –Reserve books for 1 night (3 PM to 8:30 AM) –Strict reserve books (for library use only) Interlibrary Loans (ILL)

7 Developing a topic ! Where should you start ? Properly define your topic Identify the topic’s key concepts Determine which type of information sources could be useful for your assignment Gather information Read and evaluate what you have found

8 Search strategies How to locate a vast amount of information in a library catalogue or an article database, searching for the author, title, subjects, … ?

9 Using search tools (1/2) Search statement : write an expression the search tool can interpret using boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) and truncation (*), for example : –Topic : the effects of eating disorders on teenagers –Possible search Statement : (eating disorder OR bulimia OR anorexia) AND (teen* OR youth OR adolescent*)

10 Using search tools (2/2) Use quotation marks to search the exact phrase or expression, for example : « video games » Truncation : the asterisk (*) can replace the missing caracter(s) Parentheses to group keywords Field searching : author, title, subject, keywords, …

12 Internet and search engines Where you can find a wealth of information on almost any topic imaginable, BUT … Internet documents have not necessarily been evaluated Most do not index pages according to standards like those used in library catalogues and databases Many times, their goals are different from yours !
