SENIORS FUTURE PLANNING PRESENTATION

What are your options?  College – 4 year Public (UW schools) ex. UW Oshkosh, UW Green Bay, UW Madison  College-4 year Private (ex. St. Norbert, Ripon)  College – 2 year (freshman/sophomore campuses)  Trade/Specialty schools (ex. Gil-Tech)  Technical College (ex. Fox Valley Technical College)  Military (Army, Marines, Navy, Airforce, Coast Guard, reserves)  Work force

Two Year College  What is an example of a two year college?  UW Fox Valley in Menasha  Advantages  Cost (much cheaper)  Location

Two Year College  Guaranteed Transfer  Have guaranteed transfer into any UW System college by meeting certain criteria Example: Start at UW Fox Valley for 2 years do your general studies, then transfer onto UW Oshkosh or other 4 year college.. Why?? Maybe want to save money, Grade Point Average/Act scores not high enough, proximity?

Factors to Consider  Cost  College Characteristics (size, location, public/private)  Financial Aid (In spring, if you fill out the FAFSA, you will get a report on how much money they might be able to give you..can decide then)  Student Population  Admission Requirements  Academics –Major—( not every college will have your major)..go to majormania.com

Four Year College  Visit colleges - to know that it is the right fit for you— there are many college campus visit days coming up…  Want to visit with over 100 college representatives? Wisconsin Educational Fairs are in a couple of weeks!! You need to register if you are interested and print out barcode! See postcard for details  Majors  It is okay to declare an undecided major!! Many freshman either are undecided or end up changing their major after their first year!!  If you do declare a major, make sure the colleges you are applying to have that program!

Admissions Requirements  UW System Colleges  English 4 credits  Math3 credits  Science3 credits  Social Studies3 credits  Electives2 credits  Electives (foreign lang.)2 credits UW Eau Claire and UW Madison: 2 credits of foreign language (possibly some private/out of state colleges)..(see form)

Admission Requirements  Math – must be Algebra 2 or higher  Need 17 academic credits which include 4 elective credits  Foreign Language – former slide

Admission Requirements  UW Madison (Minimal requirements—very competitive!  English 4 credits  Math3 credits  Science3-4 credits  Social Studies3-4 credits  Foreign Language2 credits  Electives 2 credits  Typical admits have 27 and above ACT/3.5 GPA

Admission Tests NEED THE ACT TO BE ACCEPTED TO COLLEGE Colleges that need official (which means you need to contact ACT unless you wrote those schools down when filling out ACT information) ACT scores:  UW Madison  UW LaCrosse  UW Green Bay

College Representatives  Read and Listen to announcements to know when a college rep is coming  Sign up in the office to visit the college representatives! Upcoming: September 10 th (Lunch)—Army Reserves September 11 th at 1:00 UW Fox Valley (sign up in office)

Where to Apply (How)??  (for UW colleges) Questions/problems when applying..go to Ask Tyler!!  (for private 4 year colleges) Or at the college’s website: example Ripon.edu Technical colleges (visit their website)..ex.

Apply  Turn transcript sheet to Mrs. Miller along with a check, (if you did not pay online) letters of recommendation (if desired)—it costs $44.00 to apply to public 4 year colleges and private colleges all vary (look in book)  Make sure to contact ACT to send official scores (if hadn’t on ACT registration form) only those needing “official” copy..Otherwise Mrs. Miller sends a copy!  Apply early (NOW) (especially if not meeting all admission requirements—get up to 3 letters of recommendation!)

Financing your Education  Financial Aid  Apply early February (after parents file taxes)  Based on needs assessment  Colleges only get a certain amount of money and when it is gone it is gone.  Financial Aid Night January 14 th at 7:00 p.m.

Financing your Education  National Scholarships  Fall  Harder to get but still try  State Scholarships  Starting in December  Local Scholarships  Application on school website  February or March  TONS OF MONEY FOR A SMALL SCHOOL

Financing your Education  Other places to look for “free” money  Individual colleges (some colleges use college application for scholarships, and some use separate)  Youth groups  Insurance companies  Parents place of employment

UNDECIDED about your FUTURE  Stop in the school counselor office  Take interest inventories WisCareers.wisc.edu uwhelp.Wisconsin.edu/careers  Job Shadow  Set up with Mrs. Miller  Tour some businesses!!!

Scholarship websites:  Collegeboard.com  Fastweb.com  Scholarships.com  Uwhelp.Wisconsin.edu  Bigfuture.org  Zinch.com  Mrs. Miller’s website and bulletin board across from HS office

Miscellaneous Tidbits:  Males ---When you turn 18 (or if you already have) you need to register for the selective service at sss.gov  Watch deadline dates::: Very Important!!! If you apply to college early, you will have a better chance of getting scholarships! Watch deadline dates on FAFSA submission, as well…The earlier, the better—  Money from FAFSA and scholarships are given out according to their deadlines, and for grant money through FAFSA it is first come, first served…When money is gone—it is gone!!!! Apply early!!!

Still confused..need more help???  Sign up for an individual appointment time with me  Visit the Wisconsin Educational Fairs (see handout)— do a prearranged visit if need to do it during the daytime  Take advantage of the many campus visits that are going on right now.  Don’t worry!!! Ask for help!

Any Questions?  Thank you for your time and respectful behaviors
