INT 2 PHYSICAL EDUCATION SKILL & SKILL LEARNING

SKILL LEARNING & FEEDBACK PROVISION n What are skills? n How do we learn new skills? n What are the stages of learning new skills? n How do we correct and improve these skills?

What is a motor skill? n Fine motor skills Fine Fine - subtle movements -involve small muscles - eg. Piano playing, Table-tennis serve. n Gross motor skills Gross -large movements -involve major muscles - can be complicated - eg. Running, kicking, Jumping

Skill n Gross motor skills

Skill n Fine motor skills

SKILL LEARNING n Whole - Part - Whole - useful for complicated skills -isolating different areas - predominantly used in swimming, basketball

n Gradual Build-up - used to build-up complicated skills - timing can be gained easily - can be used in basketball for lay-up shot

STAGES OF SKILL LEARNING n 1 Preparation Stage n 2 Practice Stage n 3 Automatic Stage (Fitts & Posner 1967) Fitts & Posner 1967Fitts & Posner 1967

Preparation Stage (1) n Sometimes called the ‘Verbal Stage’ n Performer –makes many mistakes –needs verbal guidance –shows lack of fluency n Often needs video / picture / demo

Practice Stage (2) n Procedural knowledge stage n Performer –makes fewer mistakes –still requires some guidance –feedback is vital at this stage

Automatic Stage (3) n The Automatic Stage n Performer –has mastered the skill –makes very few mistakes –can perform it with out cognition

WHAT STAGE ARE YOU AT?

THE END n DRIVE SAFELY
