Delta Blocks Introduction (these are slides that can be projected during class and/or printed)

Mathworlds Build walls with 6 blocks Must be –Straight on top –No vertical gaps (build up)

(1) Block Wall (2) Shade Graph Paper (3) Computer Go ResetStep See Double Arrow Click and Drag Up or Down We’ll enter this wall together - straight up - none hidden - no straddlers Side View Table You can drag the elevator & Press this before changing

[1] QUICK CHECK Where does the elevator start off? At 0 seconds it is at the ______ floor. Where will the elevator be after: 1 second: ______ floor 2 seconds: ______ floor 3 seconds: ______ floor 4 seconds: ______ floor 5 seconds: ______ floor 6 seconds: ______ floor 7 seconds: ______ floor 8 seconds: ______ floor 9 seconds: ______ floor? [2] Now put points (dots) on the graph. (The first two are there to help). [3] Pull down View menu to Position and then to Bring Graph to Front. Compare the your graph from above to this graph. (Note: You can hide the graphs with this menu OR click the yellow dot in the upper corner of the graph).. 02 second elevator

[1] Can you now "think backward" from the second graph (position) to figure out what the first graph ("blocks" or velocity) will look like. How many "blocks" in the first second? Positive (up blocks) or Negative (down blocks) During second 1: (write + [for up] or - [for down]) _________ block(s) Second 2: _________ block(s) Second 3: _________ block(s) Second 4: _________ block(s) Second 5: _________ block(s) Second 6: _________ block(s) Second 7: _________ block(s) Second 8: _________ block(s) Second 9: _________ block(s) [2] Now View the velocity graph (a) In your own words, what does the velocity (first) graph tell us or show us about the elevator? (b) Where on the graph is the elevator moving fastest up? How can you tell by just looking at the graph? Circle this part of the velocity graph. (c) Where on this graph is the elevator moving down? How can you tell by looking at the graph? Circle a part of the graph where the elevator is going down. 03 third elevator Note: Use Hide Graph in menu or click yellow dot to make not visible.

[1] Draw either a Velocity graph or a Position Graph that will keep the elevator on the screen. Now challenge your partner to draw the other graph. [2] Check your partner’s work. [3] Now enter your graph into MathWorlds and see if you get the same graphs. (You should start with the graph you began with, enter this graph and then drag up the other graph to check your predictions). [4] For the graphs above circle the place(s) on each graph where the elevator would move the fastest up. [5] For the graphs above circle the place(s) on each graph where the elevator would move the fastest down. [6] For the graphs above circle the place(s) on each graph where the elevator would move be stopped. 04 Fourth Elevator
