1 Google SketchUp Castle
Please read instructions carefully. If you are confused, reread the instructions before asking for help.

2 Opening Google SketchUp
Open Google SketchUp. Look at your desktop. Double click the icon for SketchUp 8.

3 Saving Google SketchUp
Click File. Click Save As. Name your work with your name and then “Castle.” Example: John Smith Castle Save to the Network with Your Username.

4 If You Make a Mistake… Click Edit in the top menu bar.
Then click Undo. OR Click Alt and Backspace at the same time.

5 Now to start drawing: Select the person. Press the Delete button.

6 Drawing a Rectangle Select the Rectangle icon.
Starting at the Origin point, drag the corner of the rectangle out to the right and set it. Now type 40’, 70’ in the box in the bottom right hand corner with the label “Dimensions.” Press Enter. Hint: It is hard to tell if you have selected the box. Press backspace to check.

7 The Zoom, Pan and Orbit Commands
Play with these tools to see what they do. Set the drawing back to where the solid blue line is facing up and to the left of the screen.

8 Drawing Circles Click the Circle tool. Set the Center for the circle.
Set the circle outside of the rectangle. Then stretch it out and set it. In the Dimensions box, type 5’ for the radius. Press Enter. Hint: See image on next slide.

9 Drawing Circles Make sure it is off to the side of the rectangle.

10 Copying an Object Select the Move tool.
Press Control and C at the same time. Click the Circle you just made and drag away. Make 4 circles total. On PC computers

11 Creating a Midpoint Select the Line/Pencil tool.
Draw a line from one end of the circle to the other end. Make sure the line is exactly in the middle. The blue point in the middle will be the midpoint.

12 Moving the Circle Select the arrow tool.
Highlight the entire circle by clicking on it 3 times. Select the Move tool. Choose the midpoint on the line and drag it to the corner of the square. Your corner will look similar to this:

13 Moving the Circle Repeat the previous steps so that all 4 corners have circles attached. It is okay if your lines look different from this.

14 Erasing Extra Lines Select the erase tool.
Click the extra lines inside the circles and rectangles. Before After

15 Erasing Extra Lines The castle should look like this so far:

16 Select the Entire Castle
Use the Select tool. Highlight the entire shape by clicking on it 3 times.

17 Using the Offset Command
Select the Offset tool. Click the frame and pull outward. Click to set the offset. Set this distance to 18” in the Distance box. Press Enter.

18 If This Happens: Zoom in toward the edge.
Use the line tool to create a connecting line. Check all of the corners. 1st 2nd

19 Push Pull Function Select the Push/Pull tool. Pull the outer edge up.
Enter 25’ in the measurement box. Press Enter.

20 You now have walls for your Castle
Use the Orbit tool and move around your castle.

21 Create a Box Select the rectangle tool.
Draw a rectangle with measurements 18”, 48”. Draw the rectangle off to the side of the castle Select the Push/Pull tool. Pull the rectangle to 24” tall.

22 Creating a component Select the arrow tool.
Click on the block 3 times. Your block should be blue like the picture. Click Edit in the top menu bar. Click Make Component. See next slide

23 Creating a Component In the Name line, type “Wall Block.”
Press Create.

24 Components Helpful Information: Now the block cannot be changed.
This makes it easier to Move/Copy and Rotate.

25 Moving a component Select the Move tool.
Click the bottom left corner of the box. Drag the box to the top of the wall. Hint: Make sure you grab the bottom corner when moving the box.

26 Making an Array Select the Move tool.
Click Control and C at the same time. Click the bottom right corner of the block. Drag the block to the other end of the wall. Type /9 in the measurement box. Hint: Use the / sign below the 8 on the keyboard. After Before

27 Making an Array Helpful Information:
This makes 9 evenly spaced copies. Try some different numbers to see what it looks like.

28 Making Multiple Copies
Select the arrow tool. Hold down Shift and click each block along the wall. All the blocks should be blue like this:

Press Control and C at the same time. Click the outer bottom corner of the last block. Drag all the blocks to the opposite wall.

30 Make Another Copy Select one block. Select the Move tool.
Click Control and C at the same time. Click the bottom right corner of the block. Drag the copied block away from the castle.

31 Rotating the Block Select the new block. Select the Rotate tool.
A protractor will appear over the object. Place the center of the protractor on a corner.

32 Rotating an Object The next step is to create a starting line for rotating the object. Rotate the object to the desired angle on the protractor.

33 Moving the Block Select the move tool.
Move the rotated block to the shorter wall.

34 Make an Array Select the Move tool.
Click Control and C at the same time. Click the bottom right corner of the block. Drag the block to the other end of the wall. Type /4 in the measurement box. Use the / sign below the 8 on the keyboard.

35 Making Multiple Copies
Select the arrow tool. Hold down Shift and click each block along the short wall. All the blocks should be blue like this:

36 Making Multiple Copies
Press Control and C at the same time. Click the outer bottom corner of the last block. Drag all the blocks to the opposite wall.

37 Your castle should look like this:

39 Making a Door Draw the outline of the door on the wall.
Pull it out 6”. Copy the front door. Rotate it onto the ground. Pull it up 6”. Hint: Look at sequence in next slide.

41 Making Steps Create a block with the dimensions 12”, 48”, 15”.
Make it a component. Copy the block by grabbing the lower left corner and moving to that component’s upper right corner. Type *9 and press Enter. That will create nine copies of the component

42 Making a Turret Use the instructions to make a cone.
Open my Hand-out Folder. Open the CAD – Computer Aided Design folder. Open the How to Make A Cone instructions.

43 Moving the Turret First make the Turret a component.
Next center a turret on top of each cylinder (use the move/ copy command).

44 Turn It In! Click Save. Open the Hand-In Folder.
Click Jennifer Starr Hand-In Folder. Open the folder for your class period. Save your Castle in this folder. Make sure your file title includes your name.
