“Planet Tourism Ad Campaign”

Everybody has thought, “I wonder what it would be like to go to the Moon/ Mars/ Neptune or someplace else in the Solar System.” Now, through the engineering magic of your imagination and the use of Internet-based resources, you can help others fulfill their wishes as you become a “Planet Tour Guide.”

You and two partners will produce an “ad campaign” to lure “space tourists” to one of these destinations Mercury and Venus – The “Hot, Hot, Hot! Interior Planets” Moon and Mars -- “Marvelous Missions Unraveling Mysteries” Jupiter and Saturn – The “Gorgeous Gas Giants” Uranus and Neptune – “Paradise Planets beyond Our Vision Pluto and other Exoplanets” – “Wonders at the Edge of the Solar System” Asteroids and Comets – “Good Things in Small Packages” Stars and Constellations – “Bright Wonders of the World” Planets Beyond Our Solar System – “Newly-Discovered Worlds”

Your “ad” should include, at a minimum, these factors Positions in the Solar System Comparisons with Earth – composition, mass, volume, density, periods of revolution and rotation, etc. (What would you weigh on the object?) Moons and rings, if any Major surface characteristics (‘highlights of the tour’) Origin of its name, discovery, and other “touristy facts” Distance from Earth and how long it would take to reach it, assuming a velocity of 40,000 km/hr (once around the equator in 60 minutes) Something “creative” to attract “space tourists” to your locations!

Sources for Information and Images Windows to the Universe (Brought to you by the National Earth Science Teachers Association) http://www.windows2universe.org/ Go to “Solar System” to obtain lots of information about your destinations, including facts, myths, missions, images, etc. NASA’s Solar System Exploration http://solarsystem.nasa.gov/planets/

Your group can create a “video” (8-slide PowerPoint that runs sequentially). You’ll present your “ad” to the class Friday December 5th. Save your “ad” to SCPaper (T:) drive in my folder (Sebert) in the folder labeled Planet Project 8th grade 2014.

What Makes a Good Ad? The most successful ads are usually ones that have a clear concise title, a thorough and accurate description with good punctuation, clear pricing, excellent images and any other relevant information such as shipping costs etc. When writing your ads it's important to try and put yourself in the position of the kind of person you're trying to attract, and ask yourself what you'd want to see if you were interested in buying, and write your ad accordingly. Generally speaking, if there were two ads advertising the same item and one of them was clear and concise with lots of information and the other ad was basic with little information, the ad with more information will vastly outperform the basic one. Ads with little information or bad punctuation send 'bad vibes' to buyers who will look elsewhere to buy. http://www.free-ezine-directory.com/whatmakesagoodad.htm
