Table of Contents Backgound/Outer space experience Project description Sequence of activities Timeline Rubrics

Outer Space Experience If you could travel to another planet, how different would it be from Earth? As you gaze into a crystal ball, you see that NASA’s future technologies allow you to travel to every planet in our solar system. You are an astronaut of the future and will be traveling to “your” planet. In anticipation of this trip, you must plan and research information about your planet, present this information in a PowerPoint report, and tell your classmates what is interesting about your planet.

Project Description 1.Select planet, review project details (teacher PowerPoint ) 2.Use selected websites to gather facts and information about your planet. 3.Use storyboard template to design your PowerPoint report. Use checklist to assure that all criteria is met. 4.Conference with teacher. 5.Type information in PowerPoint outline view, and proofread. 6.Add background graphics, color, and animation/transitions. 7.Practice giving your report with a partner or your parent. 8.Present report in class.

Report Criteria (content): Card 1: Title Card (planet name, your name) Card 2: Planet picture and symbol Card 3: Planet statistics: minimum Placement from Sun Diameter Distance from Sun Revolution and Rotation

Card 4: Interesting facts, features, points of interest Card 5 (or next card): Websites card (websites you used for your research)

PowerPoint Criteria (technology): 4-6 cards, minimum; (include both Title and Websites cards) Use each of these features at least once: ▫graphics ▫color ▫font changes and sizes (larger font or Word Art for titles) ▫appropriate alignment ▫bulleted facts or paragraph ▫transitions/animation Optional feature usage: short video, narriation, sound (appropriate to project)

Timeline Week 1, Day 1 Introduce unit, meet with partner. Week 1, Days 2, 3, 4 Library and computer lab research. Week 1, Days 4, 5 complete storyboard, meet with teacher Week 2, Days 6-10 - build PowerPoint Week 3, Days 11-13 – continue PowerPoint Week 3, Days 14-15 – presentations.

Grading - Rubrics You will be graded on content of your report, your use of PowerPoint features, and your presentation. Now, let’s begin our outer space experience.

You will use the first two websites to find the specific statistics and symbols you need for cards 2 and 3. You will then use the appropriate websites for your planet to gather any interesting facts you would like to tell others about. If you have time, you can check out the last two websites listed.
