canal a man made inland waterway built for transportation or irrigation
child labor young children who worked in factories or mines beginning as young as 5 years old
ditch a long narrow channel or trench dug into the earth excavating digging out and removing
factory a building or set of buildings equipped for manufacturing
heritage something acquired from the past
homeland native land (where you were born)
immigrant a person who comes to a country to live there
lock an enclosure, or chamber in a canal, with watertight gates at each end (Used for raising or lowering boats from one elevation to another by filling or draining water in the chamber.)
locomotive a self-propelled engine, running on rails, used to move cars for passengers and freight
low bridge a bridge built right above the water
mills machines used in treating (as by grinding, crushing, stamping, cutting or finishing) raw material
packet boat a special boat designed to carry passengers instead of cargo (Packets traveled faster than cargo boats.)
passage a right to travel as a passenger on a boat
port a harbor town or city where ships load or unload cargo
protest a complaint, objection, or display of unwillingness or disapproval
raw materials natural or unprocessed minerals or plants from which useful products are derived or manufactured.
reform to change things for the better social reform the attempt to improve or change the unequal treatment of people
rural relating to the country, country people or life, or agriculture
steam engine an engine driven or worked by steam
stump puller a machine used to remove the base of trees (called stumps)
suburban relating to a smaller community close to a city
suffrage the right to vote
technology the use of science in solving problems
toll a small fee people pay to use a canal, bridge, or road
trade the buying, selling, or exchange of goods
transportation the moving of goods or people from one place to another
urban relating to a city
wedding of the waters the merging of two major waterways by the Erie Canal
working conditions low pay, long hours, and dangerous physical environment in the factories and mines for workers during the Industrial Revolution
