Art of India

Influences on Indian Art India was home to one of the world’s oldest civilizations. India has rich mix of cultures dominated by the religions of Hinduism and Buddhism. The two religions have influenced the style of architecture and sculpture.

Early Indian Art The earliest Indian culture existed until 1500 BC. The art of this culture included bronze and stone animal sculptures and small stamps or seals carved into stone. The people also created ceramic bowls decorated with geometric and animal motifs.

The beginning of Buddhism Buddhism became the major religion of India in the late 2 century BC. The art included many relief carvings with the teaching of Buddha.

Outside influences. The Greek armies under Alexander made conquests in Northern India. Therefore the first significant Buddhist sculpture had a Greek influence.

Hinduism Hinduism had its greatest following between the 9 th and 16 th centuries AD. This sculpture uses the teachings of Hinduism by displaying the creative and destructive powers of their gods.

Mughal influence. The Mughal empire invaded and conquered India. Their religion prohibited the use of imagery. Many Hindu temples and sculptures were destroyed. However the Mughals replaced them with mosques and beautiful palaces. The most famous is the Taj Mahal.
