TrIn 3102: Consecutive Interpreting Week 8: Midterm

Week 8 goals  Midterm dialogue (70 pts.)  Sight translation (30 points)  Complete any delayed or unfinished written assignments or practice exercises  Assignment for Week 9

Midterm Dialogue (70 pts.)  Each student will be videotaped interpreting a bilingual dialogue regarding an exit interview with the non- English-speaking parent and the English-speaking school psychologist. Group of three.  Before starting the actual dialogue, the student- interpreter will be videotaped as s/he asks the psychologist (in English) some pre-interview questions regarding what to expect before the interview begins with the parent present.  Each videotaping session will run 15 minutes with a five- minute transition to set up the next role play.  Your lab instructor will fill out an evaluation form either while you are interpreting or after viewing the taped role play at home. Please give your videotape to your lab instructor with your name, phone and address and class.

Sight Translation (30 pts.)  While you are waiting to videotape your role play or after the videotaping, you will audio record a sight translation exercise. If you have made an error during the recording, do NOT stop and rewind to tape over the error. Acknowledge the error, correct it and continue. Give yourself about minutes for the translation.  Find a quiet area/or room to record.  Material: Second language interview questionnaire sheet.  Label your audiotape with your name, phone # and address with the class # Pls. give your tape to your lab instructor.

Miscellaneous activities  After you have finished the role plays and sight translations, the lab instructor may have you do some practice exercises that were not done due to lack of time.  Check with the instructor if you have questions regarding the next assignments: 1) transcript & error analysis paper and 2) lab exercise on idiomatic expressions.

Assignment for next week 9  Deadline for both corrected transcript (written/typed with corrections in your non-English language from your interpretation of the oral discourse) and error analysis paper (written/typed in English). Give both the transcript and paper to your lab instructor.  Make sure you have completed 3 lab exercises for points: –Lab 1: videotaped role play where you prepared 10 questions –Lab 2: sight translation recorded in front of the lab instructor; also a 10-word vocabulary list with translations

Lab Exercise #3 for week 9  Listen to the conversations that you hear around you in your working languages. Listen for idiomatic phrases and make a list of those phrases. List five or more for each of your working languages. Provide a possible translation for each of the phrases. Give the list to your lab instructor. (20 pts.)
