Multiplication of Mixed Numbers Word Problems

Example:  Crystal swam 5 ⅓ lengths of the pool and JoAnn swam 1 ½ times as far as Crystal. How many lengths did JoAnn swim?  Answer: 5 ⅓ x 1 ½ = 16/3 x 3/2 = (Change to a mixed number) 16/3 x 3/2 = (Change to a mixed number) 48/6 = (Multiply numerators, then multiply denominators) 48/6 = (Multiply numerators, then multiply denominators) 8 (Reduce by dividing) 8 (Reduce by dividing)

Problems  #1 Johnny uses 1 ¼ packages of chocolate chips in his cookie recipe. He wanted more cookies and decided to make 2 ½ times the cookie recipe this time. How many packages of chocolate chips did he use?

 Mr. MacNamara has 2/3 acre of land. He wants to plant potatoes on ¾ of his land. How much land will be planted with potatoes?

 Maria ran for ¾ an hour each day for 7 days. What is her total running time?  Let a circular clock face represent 1 hour.  Draw your shape 7 times (for 7 days).  How many fourths did you draw in total?  Rearrange the parts to make as many wholes as possible.  What is Maria’s total running time (as a mixed number and improper fraction)?
